Ansel Adams' Trust Objects to AI-Colorized Artwork Showcase

Ansel Adams' Trust criticizes unauthorized AI-colorized exhibition of 'Moonrise' as unethical exploitation of the photographer's legacy.

Controversial Exhibition of AI-Colorized Artwork

The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust has officially condemned the unauthorized exhibition of an AI-colorized version of the renowned photographer's iconic work, "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico." The piece was displayed by the Danziger Gallery during The Photography Show, held by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) last month.

Trust's Statement on Unauthorized Use

According to a statement released by the Trust, they were not consulted or informed prior to the showcasing of the AI-generated artwork. The Trust criticized the Danziger Gallery for allegedly exploiting Adams' name and work for commercial purposes, stating, "Danziger Gallery exploited Ansel's name, reputation, and his most iconic image, while failing to identify any human artist responsible for its creation."

This incident comes despite the trust acknowledging Adams' interest in technology. They highlighted that he was forward-thinking about the potential of computers in photography. However, the trust emphasized that the core issue lies in the unauthorized use of Adams’ work, which it deems unacceptable.

Ethical Concerns and Commercial Exploitation

The trust reiterated their position on the ethical implications surrounding the unauthorized commercial use of Adams' work. “The Trust was not consulted or notified before the work appeared,” the Trust stated. They actively sought to address the issue with the gallery right after being alerted, reaching out to gallery owner James Danziger to assert their rights and request the removal of the artwork. Unfortunately, subsequent correspondence indicated that Danziger continued to use Adams' name and work in pursuit of a commercial AI colorization venture involving other artists' estates.

Conclusion: A Call for Ethical Practices

In concluding their statement, the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust denounced the practice of leveraging an artist’s name and work without consent for commercial gain. They labeled the incident as a "gross failure of ethical and professional judgment,” urging galleries and artists to adhere to proper attribution and permissions moving forward. The situation raises vital questions about the intersection of technology, art, and intellectual property rights in the photography world.
