Apple Continues Support for iPhones in iOS 27, Makes Slight Cuts in iPad Compatibility

Apple's iOS 27 supports all iPhones as iOS 26, but iPadOS 27 drops some older iPads. Performance upgrades highlighted for older devices.

Apple’s Commitment to Compatibility with iOS 27

Apple's latest updates, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, are generating interest among users of older devices. In a move that reassures many, Apple has confirmed that all iPhone models currently capable of running iOS 26 will also support the upcoming iOS 27. This list includes the iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE, both of which remain crucial for users looking to stay within Apple's ecosystem without upgrading their devices.

Changes in iPad Support

However, it's not all good news for iPad users. The iPadOS 27 update will discontinue support for a select few models: the 3rd-generation iPad Air, 8th-generation iPad, and 5th-generation iPad mini will not be able to upgrade, primarily because they are equipped with the older A12 Bionic chip. Meanwhile, the supported devices are expected to utilize either the A13 chip or a more advanced version.

Performance Improvements for Aging Devices

Apple states that users with older devices can look forward to performance enhancements that have been incorporated into iOS 27. This includes an updated CPU scheduler, previously available on newer iPhone models, which aims to optimize the overall functioning of these older devices. While the hardware remains the same, the updates promise a more efficient user experience.

Limitations on New Features

Despite these improvements, many of the new features announced for the latest operating systems rely on Apple Intelligence, which requires more robust hardware. Specifically, devices must have at least 8GB of RAM to access these features. For iPhones, this limitation means that only the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or newer models will benefit from Apple Intelligence functions. Similarly, iPad owners will need an iPad Air or iPad Pro with an M1 chip or newer for full capabilities.

As Apple continues to innovate while supporting older devices, users will have to navigate the balance between performance and feature availability depending on their hardware's capabilities. With iOS 27 keeping support for a broad range of iPhones, it ensures that many users can continue to enjoy new updates without the need for immediate upgrades.
