Baltimore Orioles Face Major Setback as Jordan Westburg Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
Jordan Westburg is out for the season with elbow surgery, intensifying pressure on the struggling Orioles' lineup to perform this year.
Baltimore Orioles Suffer Major Injury Blow
The Baltimore Orioles are facing a significant setback as they announced that third baseman Jordan Westburg will undergo season-ending elbow surgery. This decision comes after Westburg was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament during spring training, as reported by the Baltimore Banner.
Westburg's Injury Details
Initially, the Orioles hoped to avoid surgery and opted for a rehabilitation-focused approach, which included a platelet-rich plasma injection. However, after starting the season on the 60-day injured list, Westburg continued to experience discomfort in his elbow, forcing the team to re-evaluate his situation. He is now scheduled for surgical repair, which is likely to sideline him until well into the 2027 season.
Westburg, a former first-round pick and highly regarded prospect, had shown promise, posting an OPS+ of 114 with 17 home runs in 85 games last season despite being limited by injuries. His absence will leave a significant void at third base for the struggling Orioles, who currently sit with a record of 20-24.
Current State of the Orioles' Infield
The third base position has been a growing concern for Baltimore this season. The team's performance at third has been lackluster, with their collective OPS ranking 27th among the 30 MLB teams at just .523.
Coby Mayo has stepped in as the primary third baseman during Westburg's absence, but has struggled offensively, batting just .174 and hitting only four home runs in 109 at-bats. Mayo's defensive skills are also being tested, as he battles to meet the expectations that come with his highly-touted position as a former top prospect.
Potential Replacement: Jackson Holliday
Interestingly, Jackson Holliday, a former No. 1 overall prospect, has begun taking reps at third base during his rehab assignment from a wrist injury. Holliday, now 22, has the defensive skills to adapt but faces challenges at the plate, managing a .473 OPS during his rehabilitation. With Holliday's future potential in question, the Orioles must make strategic decisions regarding their infield setup as they navigate the remainder of the season.
Looking Ahead
The Orioles, under new manager Craig Albernaz, had high hopes for a resurgence this year. However, as they head into a crucial period in their schedule, the loss of Westburg intensifies the pressure on the remaining players to elevate their performance. With only the Houston Astros posting a worse run differential than Baltimore’s -37, the team’s prospects for a competitive season look dim. The absence of Westburg not only stifles their immediate game strategy but also casts a shadow on the overall morale as they aim to turn the situation around in the American League East.
