Basketball Commit Legend Smiley Officially Signs with Oregon State

Oregon State basketball secures Legend Smiley, a standout shooter, strengthening their roster as he enters his sophomore year.

Legend Smiley Joins Oregon State Basketball Program

In a significant boost for their upcoming season, Oregon State University has officially announced the signing of Legend Smiley, a promising basketball talent from Seattle. Smiley, who previously played at Garfield High School and spent his freshman year at the University of San Francisco, is now set to bring his elite shooting skills to the Beavers under new head coach Justin Joyner.

A Strong Addition to the Roster

Smiley’s addition positively impacts Oregon State's recruiting efforts, as Joyner builds his roster for the 2026-27 season. "Legend is exactly the type of player we want representing Oregon State University basketball," Joyner stated. "He's a Pacific Northwest guy who understands the toughness, competitiveness, and pride that come with playing in this region."
Joyner emphasized Smiley's capability against high-level competition, noting that his experience from San Francisco will greatly benefit the team.

Background and High School Success

Raised in the vibrant Central District of Seattle, Smiley attended Garfield High School, known for its rich basketball culture. Mentored by former Trailblazers star Brandon Roy, Smiley thrived, leading his team to victory in the Washington 3A state championship in 2023, where he scored 30 points in the final game. Following his successful high school career, he transferred to Link Academy in Branson, Missouri, to further develop his skills against top prep talent.

College Performance

During his freshman year at the University of San Francisco, Smiley made significant contributions on the court, playing in 33 games and earning 14 starting spots. His shooting prowess was particularly notable, with a three-point shooting percentage of 42.1%. His standout performance against Oregon State in last March's West Coast Conference Tournament, where he shot 6-for-8 from beyond the arc, caught the attention of Joyner and the Beavers' coaching staff.

Coach Joyner's Vision

Joyner expressed confidence in Smiley’s ability to seamlessly integrate into the team's offensive and defensive systems. "What stands out immediately is his ability to shoot the basketball—he spaces the floor at an elite level and makes defenses pay," he noted. Joyner also highlighted Smiley's versatile skill set that allows him to impact the game in various roles and guard multiple positions effectively.

As Smiley prepares to enter his sophomore year, he has three years of eligibility remaining, making his signing a strategic move for the Beavers as they aim for a successful season ahead.

Oregon State fans can expect exciting performances as Smiley takes the court, contributing to the team's goals under a revitalized coaching staff.
