ChatGPT Launches Personalized Financial Advice Feature for US Users

OpenAI's ChatGPT now offers personalized financial advice for US users who connect their bank accounts via Plaid.

ChatGPT Enhances Financial Advice Capabilities

OpenAI has officially launched a new feature within ChatGPT, allowing Pro users in the US to connect their bank accounts and receive tailored financial recommendations. This innovative integration, established in collaboration with Plaid, paves the way for a more personalized financial experience for users.

Unleashing Personalized Financial Guidance

With more than 200 million users turning to ChatGPT monthly for advice on financial management, OpenAI aims to transform the chatbot's function from providing generic suggestions to delivering specific guidance tailored to individual financial situations. By linking their accounts to ChatGPT via Plaid, users can now receive insights based on their actual financial data, dramatically enhancing the chatbot's ability to assist.

Seamless Integration Process

To utilize this feature, users need to navigate to the "Finances" section in ChatGPT's sidebar or simply type a prompt like "@Finances, connect my accounts." ChatGPT will guide them through the process of importing their financial information securely through Plaid, which connects to over 12,000 financial institutions including major banks and financial services like Affirm and Robinhood.

Upon successful connection, ChatGPT will generate a visual dashboard outlining the user's financial landscape. This may take a few moments to create, but once ready, users can choose from starter prompts or inquire about specific financial topics.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

Recognizing that sharing financial information might raise privacy concerns, OpenAI has taken measures to limit the visibility of sensitive data. According to the company, ChatGPT will only be able to access specific information — such as account balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities — without seeing full account numbers or having the ability to make any changes to the accounts.

Users also retain control over their data; they can disconnect their accounts from ChatGPT at any time. Furthermore, any details that the chatbot remembers about the user's financial situation can be viewed or deleted directly from the Finances section in the app. Notably, these memories remain inaccessible when using ChatGPT's temporary chats feature, ensuring an additional layer of privacy.

Future Plans for Expansion

OpenAI's spokesperson noted that the idea for this feature predates the company's recent acquisition of fintech startup Hiro, which provides an AI-driven financial planning tool. The development team is focused on refining the user experience based on feedback before rolling out this service to a broader audience, including Plus subscribers. "We're starting with a preview to a smaller group so we can learn from real-world use, improve the experience, and expand thoughtfully," OpenAI explained.
