Gerardo Merida Sanchez, the former security chief of Mexico's Sinaloa state, has been arrested in Arizona on allegations of conspiring with the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. Federal court records reveal that Sanchez was taken into custody on May 11 and later transferred to New York where he faces serious charges related to drug trafficking and corruption.
Sanchez, who served as Sinaloa’s public security secretary from September 2023 to December 2024, stands accused of accepting over $100,000 in monthly bribes from Los Chapitos, a powerful faction of the cartel led by the sons of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
