Gunmen Kidnap 23 Children from Nigerian Orphanage

23 children were kidnapped from an unauthorized orphanage in Kogi State, Nigeria, with security rescuing 15 but 8 still missing.

Gunmen Abduct 23 Children from Unregistered Nigerian Orphanage

In a shocking incident that highlights the ongoing crisis of mass abductions in Nigeria, armed gunmen kidnapped at least 23 children from a makeshift orphanage in Kogi State on Sunday night. The children were taken from the Dahallukitab Group of Schools, an unregistered facility located in a remote area of Lokoja, the state capital.

Details of the Kidnapping

According to Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information, the incident occurred late on Sunday evening. Thankfully, a prompt and coordinated response from security agencies managed to rescue 15 of the abducted children. However, eight children remain unaccounted for, and the wife of the orphanage's proprietor was also kidnapped during the raid.

Fanwo confirmed that search and rescue operations are actively underway, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement to secure the safe return of the remaining victims and apprehend the criminals behind the attack.

The Situation in Nigeria

Mass kidnappings, often carried out for ransom, have surged in Nigeria, particularly in rural regions that often lack a strong government presence. This has become a lucrative crime tactic for armed gangs and terrorist organizations across the country.

While the report did not specify the ages of the kidnapped children, it referred to them as “pupils,” generally indicating individuals from kindergarten to primary school age, often below 12 years.

A Broader Context of Insecurity

Nigeria faces a multi-faceted security crisis, characterized by escalations of violence driven by groups such as Boko Haram, armed bandits, and other regional insurgent factions. The North Central Region, which includes Kogi State, has seen an alarming rise in violent attacks in recent months, including kidnappings from schools. In fact, just last November, dozens were abducted from a school in neighboring Niger State, a situation attributed to Boko Haram's ongoing insurgency in the area.

As this latest situation unfolds, both government officials and the community remain on high alert, hoping for the swift recovery of the abducted children and an end to the ongoing cycle of violence and abduction that has plagued rural Nigeria.
