Kansas Officially Adds High School Girls Flag Football As Official Sport
Kansas will officially sanction high school girls flag football, starting in the 2026-27 school year, with support from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kansas Rounds Up Support for Girls Flag Football
The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has officially sanctioned high school girls flag football as a recognized sport. This decision makes Kansas the 18th state in the United States to endorse girls flag football at the high school level, a move that illustrates a growing commitment to expanding opportunities for young female athletes.
Vote of Confidence from KSHSAA Members
In a decisive vote that demonstrated overwhelming support, 61 out of 62 KSHSAA members voted in favor of adding girls flag football to the roster of sanctioned sports. The petition titled "Let Her Play," which garnered over 11,000 signatures, was a significant factor in pushing for the inclusion of girls flag football. Bill Faflick, KSHSAA executive director, expressed his enthusiasm:
"This is a great day for the KSHSAA as our leadership board took decisive action by approving the expansion of program offerings to include girls flag football."
Faflick also highlighted the valuable contributions from various stakeholders, including the Kansas City Chiefs, in supporting this initiative.
Kansas City Chiefs: Champions for Change
Clark Hunt, chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs, acknowledged the critical role the community played in advocating for the sport. "Today’s vote will make it possible for so many girls across the state of Kansas to play flag football. We’re incredibly grateful to the fans, families, educators, school leaders, and communities across Kansas who raised their voices and showed up in support of these athletes," Hunt stated.
A Bright Future for Girls Flag Football
Girls flag football has been available as a club sport for Kansas high schools since 2021, with 28 schools participating last year. Each school averaged 24 players per roster, showcasing a genuine interest and potential for growth in the sport. Competitive seasons will consist of 6 to 10 games leading up to KSHSAA state tournaments, which will commence in the 2026-27 school year.
As details about classifications and tournament formats are announced in the coming months, the excitement and anticipation build for what promises to be a transformative experience for young female athletes across Kansas. This official sanctioning not only opens doors for competition but also promotes inclusivity and empowerment in sports for girls in the state.
Kansas now joins the ranks of other states like Alabama, California, and New York that have recognized the importance of girls flag football, ensuring that female athletes receive the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
The announcement marks a significant milestone in high school sports, affirming the growing trend toward recognizing and supporting women's athletics.
