Katelyn Ohashi Shines at U.S. Classic, Falls Short of Championship Qualifying Score

Katelyn Ohashi impresses at her first U.S. Classic but misses qualifying for the U.S. Championships by just four tenths. She aims for the 2028 Olympics.

Katelyn Ohashi Shines at U.S. Classic

Katelyn Ohashi made a remarkable return to gymnastics at her first U.S. Classic in Hartford, demonstrating significant skill as a senior elite gymnast. Competing just weeks after her comeback at the American Classic, Ohashi scored 13.200 on both the balance beam and floor, showcasing her trademark showmanship and artistry. However, despite her impressive performances, Ohashi fell short of the qualifying score needed for the U.S. Championships in Phoenix.

Impressive Performances

Balance Beam and Floor Events

Ohashi's routines brought the crowd to life as she executed her acrobatic elements with grace and precision. On the balance beam, she nailed her dismount, earning thunderous applause from the audience. Her score of 13.200 was consistent with her previous performance at the American Classic, placing her amongst the top competitors of the evening.

In her floor routine, she again achieved a score of 13.200, finishing fifth overall. This reflected a remarkable improvement of almost two points from her earlier competition, bringing her total score for the evening to 26.400. Despite this leap in performance, Ohashi needed a two-event score of 26.800 to automatically qualify for the upcoming U.S. Championships in August.

Just Short of Qualification

With her total score falling just four-tenths short of the qualification threshold, Ohashi left the competition knowing her immediate goal of reaching the U.S. Championships was unfulfilled. "I couldn’t ask for anything more. I feel like I had a really solid meet," she expressed in a post-competition interview, highlighting her satisfaction with her performances despite the outcome.

Strategy and Artistic Presentation

Artistic Focus

Working with her coaches at Pacific Reign, Ohashi adopted an artistic approach during her routines aimed at enhancing her scoring potential. Although attempting to balance this with fewer acrobatic elements, a miscalculation led to her difficulty score being downgraded initially on the beam. Reflecting on this, Ohashi humorously remarked, "My score went down ... But you have to gamble, right?"

Looking Ahead to LA 2028

Despite narrowly missing the qualifying score, Ohashi’s routines resonated with joy, a sentiment echoed by the audience, who celebrated her with loud cheers throughout the competition. "That’s what my gymnastics is about: being happy and bringing the joy in," she shared, emphasizing her passion for the sport.

While her chances for the U.S. Championships may now hang in the balance, her sights remain firmly set on the horizon. Ohashi is determined to secure a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, using this experience as a stepping stone on her ongoing journey in gymnastics. "At the end of the day, I’m so proud of everything I’ve done this year," she stated, embracing the accomplishments she’s achieved on her path to Olympic glory.
