Landslide in Southwest China Buries Buildings, Strands Residents
A landslide in Pengshui County, China, buried buildings and trapped residents. Rescue operations continue amid ongoing rainfall.
Landslide Overview
A significant landslide struck Pengshui County, located just outside of Chongqing in southwest China, early on Friday morning, burying several residential buildings and trapping an unknown number of people. The incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. local time, shortly after an emergency warning prompted the evacuation of over 60 residents, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Rescue Operations Underway
Despite the chaos, at least nine individuals have been successfully rescued from the debris, with reports indicating that they escaped without injuries. The local authorities have mobilized a vast rescue effort, deploying around 100 rescue workers, along with numerous vehicles, to the scene where large rocks and debris now cover the area.
Images from the site show emergency teams laboring through the rubble in a bid to locate any remaining survivors, highlighting both the scale of the disaster and the challenging conditions in which the teams are working. The landslide occurred in a region characterized by steep slopes adjacent to the Wujiang River.
Evacuation Timelines and Warnings
Just before the landslide, community workers observed falling rocks in the area and raised the alarm around 8 a.m. local time. Authorities were able to initiate an evacuation protocol, instructing local residents to leave their homes; however, the landslide struck before the evacuation could be fully executed, making the situation more dire.
Background on Pengshui County
Pengshui County is located in the southeast region of Chongqing municipality, bordering the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou, and is known for its complex geographical features, including karst mountains that create a scenic, yet potentially hazardous, environment. This area is often vulnerable to landslides, particularly during the rainy season when heavy rainfall can destabilize hillsides.
As rescue operations continue, authorities will monitor weather patterns closely to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of any remaining residents in the affected area.
