Logan Marshall-Green Discusses His Role in CBS's Marshals
Logan Marshall-Green is no stranger to the intense world of crime dramas, having built a compelling career that spans stage and screen. In CBS's Marshals, he embodies Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Pete "Cal" Calvin, a character navigating explosive action alongside deep personal struggles. With the series renewed for a second season, Marshall-Green delves into his character's journey and what fans can expect moving forward.
The Demanding Nature of Filming
Reflecting on the arduous filming schedule for the first season, Marshall-Green noted, "It was brutal. That shoot was a lot of work, and it was brutal on the crew, brutal on the cast. We were pulling 70-80 hour weeks and shooting six days a week." This relentless commitment ensured that the stakes in the series remained high, culminating in an action-packed finale that left viewers on the edge of their seats.
Cal’s Journey and Redemption
The season finale concluded dramatically, with Cal facing a cliffhanger situation as guns were drawn on him. When asked about what lies ahead for his character, Marshall-Green hinted, "We’re going to pick up right where we left off. That cliffhanger will energetically go right back into it, and there will be a lot of consequences. There’s a lot of drama in the first episode."
As an actor, he hopes that the series continues to challenge Cal, particularly regarding health issues such as cancer, a poignant topic that resonates with him on a personal level. "Maybe he could be a cancer survivor—or maybe not. I don’t want to tell a safe story. I want it to feel earned."
Exploring Father-Daughter Relationship
A significant highlight of Cal’s character arc is his relationship with his estranged daughter. Marshall-Green emphasizes that this dynamic is central to Cal's motivation: "His universe was Maddie, and it was getting back into her life. That love story is the most important."
The emotional weight of these scenes, particularly ones involving reconciliation, strikes a personal chord with the actor. "The scenes with my estranged daughter are incredibly hard on me," he admitted, underscoring the authenticity he strives to convey.
Physical Challenges and Set Dynamics
The physical demands of filming presented their share of challenges. Marshall-Green recalls one specific scene where he had to portray hypothermia, describing it as "one of the harder things I’ve done." He adds, "To keep that ball in the air for a full episode was not fun."
Despite his extensive experience in the industry, the actor feels he learns from his peers rather than mentoring them. He remarked, "I always just try to show up, be prepared, lead by example. I'm not a mentor to anyone on that set." His respect for the diverse talents of his co-stars shines through as he acknowledges the collaborative nature of the work.
Passion for Indigenous Storytelling
The opportunity to work with indigenous narratives has been particularly meaningful for Marshall-Green. He stated, "What drew me the most was the casting of all of the indigenous actors and being able to work with indigenous stories." His desire to contribute to authentic storytelling is evident, as he feels proud to be part of a project that highlights these important narratives.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Marshall-Green expressed a keen interest in returning to stage acting, stating, "It’s been a long time since I've been on stage, so it’s something I'm going to be pursuing pretty heavily after this." This ambition complements his ongoing work in film and television, illustrating his dedication to the craft in multiple dimensions.
In closing, Logan Marshall-Green remains eager about the future, both for himself and Marshals. With the next season set to tackle new challenges and complex themes, fans can look forward to more explosive action intertwined with deeply personal stories.
