Nepali Mount Everest Guide Rescued After Six Days of Isolation

Dawa Sherpa, a Mount Everest guide, is safely rescued after being missing for six days, bringing joy to his family who feared tragedy.

Dawa Sherpa Found Alive After Six Days

Dawa Sherpa, a 52-year-old Nepali mountaineering guide, has been found alive after going missing for six days on the treacherous slopes of Mount Everest. His disappearance raised alarm and despair among family and colleagues, especially after his last sighting on May 29 when he was descending the mountain.

Discovery of Dawa Sherpa

On Thursday morning, a dedicated search crew spotted Dawa crawling toward base camp in the hazardous area of the Khumbu Icefall. According to Pemba Sherpa from 8K Expeditions, who played a role in the search efforts, the courageous guide was discovered by a crew from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, which is responsible for maintaining the climbing routes on Everest.

Dawa was quickly provided with food and water before being airlifted to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu. News of his discovery was initially met with disbelief by his family, who had been preparing for the worst.

Family's Long Wait and Relief

At home in Kathmandu, Dawa's wife, Damu Sherpa, and teenage daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, had already initiated funeral rituals, reflecting their fear of losing him permanently. They received the news of his survival from a local source, prompting Mendo Lhamu to request photographic proof to confirm the identity of the rescuer.

“It was a moment of disbelief and overwhelming happiness when we confirmed he was alive,” Mendo Lhamu recounted. The emotional rollercoaster highlighted the harrowing reality faced by families of climbers during the perilous seasons on Everest.

Context of the Climb and Challenges Faced

Dawa Sherpa was guiding a Polish climber who successfully reached base camp but reported that Dawa did not accompany him. The delay in launching a search effort contributed to the prolonged fears for his safety, as rescue helicopters initially struggled to locate him amid challenging conditions.

This season has been particularly busy on Mount Everest, with over 1,000 climbers attempting to reach the summit, leading to significant crowding and tragic incidents. So far, at least five mountaineers have lost their lives in the current climbing season.

Dawa's survival, against all odds, serves as a glimmer of hope amid the hardships faced on the world's highest peak. The resilience and perseverance that guided him through the harsh conditions of Everest have allowed his family to celebrate his miraculous return to safety.
