Netflix's Ad-Supported Tier Surpasses 250 Million Monthly Users
Netflix's ad tier now boasts over 250 million monthly users, fueled by rising subscription costs and upcoming expansions to new countries.
Netflix's Ad Tier Milestone
Netflix has announced a remarkable milestone for its ad-supported tier, which now boasts over 250 million monthly active users. This figure, disclosed during the company's recent Upfront presentation, highlights substantial growth from the previous 70 million users in 2024 and 94 million in 2025.
Expansion Plans
As part of its strategy to capitalize on the increasing popularity of its Basic with Ads plan, Netflix plans to expand availability to 15 more countries starting next year. These include:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Colombia
- Denmark
- Indonesia
- Ireland
- The Netherlands
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Peru
- Philippines
- Poland
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Thailand
This expansion is anticipated to further enhance user acquisition in different markets, making Netflix's offerings more accessible globally.
Growing Popularity Amid Rising Costs
Launched in 2022, the Basic with Ads tier has quickly gained traction among subscribers, particularly as Netflix has raised subscription prices. Earlier this year, the company increased all monthly subscription costs by $1, prompting more users to opt for the ad-supported tier as a cost-effective alternative.
Integration of AI Technology
In line with current technological trends, Netflix has also started integrating AI technology into its ad services. The company is testing new applications aimed at delivering "personalized ad loads and frequency caps that dynamically adjust the ads our members see, based on their viewing behaviors." This initiative reflects a growing trend in streaming services focused on customization and user engagement.
Legal Challenges in Texas
Despite its success, Netflix faces legal hurdles, as it is currently embroiled in a lawsuit in Texas concerning allegations of illegal user data sales to advertisement technology companies. The streaming service asserts that the lawsuit is grounded in misinformation, labeling the claims as "inaccurate and distorted."
In summary, Netflix's ad-supported service has not only attracted a record number of users but also positioned itself to grow further in new markets while innovating through technology, despite facing some controversies.
