Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Hospitalized Amid Health Crisis
Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalized following a severe health decline while in custody, raising alarms from human rights activists.
Critical Health Deterioration of Narges Mohammadi
Narges Mohammadi, the renowned Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been hospitalized due to a severe decline in her health conditions while imprisoned. This alarming situation has prompted her foundation to announce that she suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a significant cardiac crisis, leading to her transfer from prison to a hospital facility.
Prison Conditions and Health Issues
According to reports from the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, prison doctors concluded that her medical condition could not be adequately managed within the prison environment. Despite ongoing medical recommendations for specialized care in Tehran, her transfer was labelled as an "unavoidable necessity". The foundation disclosed that Mohammadi had fainted twice earlier in the day while incarcerated at the Zanjan prison in northwestern Iran.
In March, Mohammadi was believed to have experienced a heart attack, as reported by her legal representatives who visited her shortly after the incident. Observations indicated that she appeared pale and underweight, requiring assistance from nursing staff to walk, which raised significant concerns about her well-being.
Background on Mohammadi's Incarceration
The 53-year-old activist has been incarcerated since December 12, 2022, after her arrest during a visit to Mashhad. She was sentenced to over seven years in prison in February, with six years of that term following an accusation of "gathering and collusion to commit crimes". Her family has pointed out that her declining health is linked to alleged physical abuse during her arrest, claiming she was assaulted by multiple men who hit her on various parts of her body.
The Nobel committee has condemned what they labeled as the "ongoing life-threatening mistreatment" of Mohammadi, emphasizing the urgent need for her safety and health needs to be prioritized. However, the Iranian government has yet to comment on the accusations of violence and the conditions of her detention.
Prior to her current imprisonment, she had been sentenced to a total of 13 years and nine months for other political charges but had received temporary release in 2024 on medical grounds. Her current health crisis has further spotlighted the ongoing struggles of political prisoners in Iran and the broader implications for human rights within the region.
International Reaction
The international community continues to express outrage over Mohammadi's treatment, as human rights organizations call for her immediate release and proper medical care. Advocates stress that her deteriorating health is a direct result of the harsh realities faced by political dissidents in Iran, amplifying calls for systemic reforms in the country's treatment of prisoners and an end to the harassment of activists.
Narges Mohammadi's plight highlights the ongoing challenges faced by human rights defenders in Iran, who often endure extreme conditions and legal repercussions for their advocacy efforts. Her situation remains under close scrutiny as advocates continue to fight for her rights and those of countless other political prisoners in similar predicaments.
