Polish President Considers Revoking Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle

Poland's President Nawrocki may revoke Zelenskyy's Order of the White Eagle over a military unit name, prompting outrage among Polish leaders.

Poland's Outrage Over Zelenskyy's Decree

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has expressed outrage over a recent decree by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which names a military special forces unit "Heroes of the UPA" after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). This move, viewed as a tribute to a group linked to historical atrocities against Poles during World War II, has sparked significant backlash within Poland.

Historical Context

The UPA has a contentious legacy; while some Ukrainian nationalists celebrate their efforts against the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, the group is also associated with brutal actions during the Volhynia massacres. These events, which occurred between 1943 and 1945, are said to have resulted in the deaths of approximately 100,000 Poles. The renaming of the Ukrainian unit has thus resonated deeply with Poland’s historical sensitivities.

Reactions from Polish Leadership

In response to Zelenskyy’s decree, President Nawrocki proposed that the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle, which oversees Poland's highest honour, should convene to discuss revoking the award from Zelenskyy. Nawrocki labeled the decree "outrageous", indicating that it undermines the historical ties between Poland and Ukraine, especially at a time when both nations are united against Russian aggression.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed Nawrocki's sentiments, stating that Zelenskyy’s actions "wound our historical sensitivity" and could jeopardize the amicable relations fostering support against Russia.

Public Figures Voice Discontent

Prominent Polish figures are also voicing their concerns. Lech Walesa, the former President of Poland and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, announced he would stop wearing a Ukrainian flag pin, asserting that Zelenskyy’s actions have insulted him and the memory of those who suffered during the massacres. Walesa remarked on his social media that honoring the UPA "insults me and all our massacred compatriots".

Ongoing Support Amid Tensions

Despite the tensions stirred by this decree, Poland maintains a critical role in supporting Ukraine through the ongoing conflict with Russia since February 2022. The nation has been pivotal in providing military aid and acting as a conduit for Western support to Ukraine. However, as the war persists with no end in sight, Zelenskyy’s efforts to galvanize national unity through historical figures reveal the complexities of navigating historical narratives amidst contemporary geopolitics. As a point of reference, the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle is scheduled to meet on June 8, where the fate of Zelenskyy’s honor will be deliberated.
