Sherif Ekramy's Retirement Announcement
Sherif Ekramy, the distinguished goalkeeper known for his tenure with Al Ahly and Pyramids FC, has officially retired from professional football after a remarkable career that spanned over three decades. In an interview, Ekramy expressed that he felt it was the right moment to step back from the sport, citing diminishing passion and the increasing toll of training and competitive commitments as key factors in his decision.
Reflections on His Career
Ekramy shared his thoughts on his storied career, during which he achieved numerous accolades including multiple Egyptian Premier League titles and African Champions League victories. He remarked, "I accomplished everything I set out to achieve with Al Ahly, and once I realized it was time to move on, I made the decision to retire."
Among his most challenging moments, he highlighted a difficult match against Ghana, in which Egypt suffered a heavy defeat of 6-1, and another memorable game against Al Masry in 2012. He described the latter as one of the toughest experiences of his life.
Ekramy recalled, "During the match against Ghana, expectations were high because we had performed excellently in the qualifiers. However, everything collapsed during that game; the team was not at its best."
Future Aspirations
Despite stepping away from football, Ekramy remains uncertain about what the future holds. He expressed an interest in pursuing opportunities in sports media or administrative roles, but emphasized that he is in no hurry to make a decision. "I want to succeed in whatever position I take on, but right now, I need to rest and gather myself after a long career," he stated.
Impressive Career Statistics
Throughout his career, Ekramy played 371 matches, conceded 280 goals, and kept a clean sheet in 166 of those games, showcasing his skill as a top goalkeeper. His tenure with Al Ahly was particularly fruitful, where he secured eight Egyptian League titles, several domestic cups, and multiple international championships, including four African Champions League trophies.
Ekramy concluded by emphasizing the emotional difficulty of his retirement decision, admitting that while he is grateful for his successes, leaving the sport he loves is undeniably bittersweet.
