Significant Gains in Australian Broadband Speeds, ACCC Reports

Australia's latest ACCC report shows homes now receive 99.4% of advertised broadband speeds—a notable improvement since 2017.

ACCC's Final Report Shows Improved Broadband Performance in Australia

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released its last Measuring Broadband Australia report, revealing significant advancements in internet speeds for consumers in the country. The data from this final quarterly report indicates that Australian homes are now achieving an impressive average of 99.4% of their advertised download speeds. This marks a remarkable increase from the 80% average when the reports first began in 2017.

Improvements Over Time

The report, covering the period from March 1 to March 31, 2026, demonstrates a steady ascent in broadband performance. The previous report highlighted an average of 98.5% of advertised speeds during peak evening hours, indicating that Australians are increasingly benefiting from reliable internet access.

Historically, the Measuring Broadband reports served as an impartial resource to provide consumers insights into the speed, latency, and reliability of various broadband services offered in the market.

As ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey noted, these reports have played a crucial role in bringing transparency and accountability to the broadband sector, ensuring that consumers receive the level of service they are promised.

Decrease in Underperforming Services

The findings also showcased a marked decrease in underperforming fixed-line broadband services, dropping from 13.9% in May 2018 to just 5.6% in the latest report. This indicates a positive trend towards better compliance with advertised speeds by service providers.

Furthermore, the ACCC highlighted the performance of the NBN Co's fixed wireless network, which recorded average download speeds of 160.5Mbps for rural and regional users, providing a strong alternative to fixed-line broadband services.

Top Performers in the Industry

Among the leading NBN providers, Dodo and iPrimus have emerged as top performers, consistently delivering speeds exceeding their advertised plans—reaching up to 102.8% and 102.3% respectively during peak usage times. Other notable providers, including Leaptel, TPG, and Exetel, also reported speeds above 102% across all hours.

Brakey emphasized the ongoing responsibility of internet providers to meet the speed and service standards they advertise, stating the ACCC will maintain strong enforcement measures against any misleading claims made by providers.

Conclusion and Future Monitoring

Although this official reporting series has concluded, the ACCC pledged to continue monitoring broadband service quality through ongoing data collection. The report’s findings highlight not only the evolution of the NBN Co’s network but also instill greater confidence among consumers regarding the reliability and performance of their broadband services.

As Australians evaluate their internet options, many can now make informed decisions based on the ACCC's substantial body of work and other ongoing reports from organizations like OpenSignal.

For those seeking to maximize their internet speed and reliability, this report serves as a solid foundation, paving the way for informed choices in an evolving digital landscape.
