Tragic Loss on Nakba Day: Seven Palestinians Killed in Gaza Air Strikes

At least seven Palestinians, including women and a child, were killed in air strikes in Gaza on Nakba Day as tensions continue to escalate.

Air Strikes Claim Lives on Nakba Day

In a tragic escalation of violence, Israeli air strikes targeted Gaza City on Nakba Day, resulting in the deaths of at least seven Palestinians, among them three women and a child. These strikes were reportedly aimed at Izz al-Din al-Haddad, a leader of Hamas, although as of yet, it remains unconfirmed whether he was killed in the raids.

Impact of the Attacks

The attacks specifically hit a residential building and a civilian vehicle, dramatically impacting civilian life during a critical commemoration for Palestinians. Medical sources indicated that four individuals were killed in the building strike located in the Rimal neighborhood, and three others were reported dead following the attack on the vehicle. In total, approximately 45 individuals sustained injuries, with several in critical condition.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene marked by significant destruction. According to Ibrahim Al Khalili, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza, the strikes involved at least four missiles, leading to a massive fire engulfing the residential area.

Authorities reported that hundreds were living in the apartment building that was targeted, raising serious concerns about the nature and toll of such military actions in densely populated areas. Mahmoud Basel, a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense, condemned the missile strike, stating that there were no prior warnings issued to the residents, exacerbating the tragedy.

Context of Violence

This latest assault coincided with the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day, a somber date marking the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the establishment of Israel in 1948. The day symbolizes ongoing struggles against displacement and historical injustice.

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, justified the air strikes by stating that al-Haddad was a key figure responsible for violence against Israelis. They labeled him as one of the architects of the October 7 attacks, despite the lack of direct evidence confirming his death in this latest operation.

Continued Military Actions

Since a ceasefire was declared last October, violence has reportedly persisted in the region, with nearly 850 Palestinians reported killed in Israeli operations during that time. Observers had hoped that the ceasefire would lead to improved conditions for Palestinians, yet many feel it has only fostered further tragedy.

In light of these developments, Al Khalili noted the feelings of despair among the Palestinian population, who anticipated a relief that has yet to arrive. The cycle of violence continues to impact the civilian community, illustrating the tragic realities faced in Gaza beyond the headlines.
