Training for the Leadville 100: My Experience with Road Shoes
Discover my experience with the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5 during ultramarathon training and why it stands out among competition.
Preparing for the Leadville 100
As I gear up for the Leadville 100 ultramarathon this August, my training has predominantly taken place on the pavement of South Florida. With no trails or significant elevation in sight—just the occasional bridge to simulate a climb—I've focused on increasing my mileage rather than elevation. This means I've had the chance to thoroughly test various road running shoes to see how they hold up under the demanding conditions of long, fast runs.
Trial and Triumph: The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5
During my training, the standout shoe has been the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5. Having previously trained in the V4 model with great success, my initial skepticism about how the V5 could improve was quickly dispelled. The V5 offers more room in the toe box, providing much-needed comfort during extended runs.
Superior Energy Return and Comfort
The first feature that struck me with the V5 is its remarkable energy return, attributed to the FuelCell midsole constructed from 100% PEBA. This enhanced responsiveness has made fast-paced running feel effortless. The full carbon plate further amplifies this effect, making the shoe ideally suited for longer distances and speed workouts. Even during long runs of 20 to 30 miles, the shoe retains its responsiveness, eliminating foot pain or blistering, and its overall cushioning strikes the perfect balance for a performance shoe.
Exploring Alternatives: Other Road Shoes
While the New Balance shoe currently leads my rotation, I’ve also been testing several other models to see how they compare.
Saucony Endorphin Speed 5
The Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 has proven to be a reliable choice for varied runs. Whether for a quick sprint, long-distance training, or tempo days, its versatility has kept me reaching for it repeatedly.
Adidas Evo SL
Alongside, the Adidas Evo SL stands out as another solid all-around option. It has consistently performed well, providing comfort without any hotspots or blisters, making it an easy choice for longer efforts.
Conclusion: Road Shoes for Ultrarunning
Although these road shoes are not meant for racing at Leadville, they are crucial in my training regimen as I build up mileage. The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5 has proven itself as my go-to shoe for long and speed days, and I look forward to integrating more trail-specific shoes as the race approaches. This will involve transitioning to more mountainous regions and honing in on the right footwear for the varied terrain of the ultramarathon.
The next phase of my training will see me splitting time between Montana and Colorado, focused on climbing and elevation to prepare for the race. For now, my shoes will help lay a robust foundation of road miles as I prepare for an unprecedented challenge ahead.
