US Jewish Leader and Israel Advocate Abe Foxman Dies at 86
Abe Foxman, a prominent Jewish leader and ADL head, died at 86, leaving a significant legacy in Israel advocacy and the fight against anti-Semitism.
Passing of a Prominent Jewish Leader
Abraham "Abe" Foxman, a distinguished advocate for Israel and a prominent voice in the Jewish community, passed away on Sunday at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which he led for nearly three decades, cementing its status as a powerful organization in combatting anti-Semitism and promoting Jewish interests.
Legacy of Advocacy
Foxman dedicated much of his life to fighting against anti-Semitism and advocating for Israel. He was born in Poland and survived the Holocaust, which profoundly shaped his views and commitment to Jewish causes. Joining the ADL in 1965, he became the national director in 1987, serving in that role until 2015, during which time he transformed the organization into one of the most influential advocacy groups in the United States.
ADL Board Chair Nicole Munchnik lauded Foxman as an “outspoken, passionate, and tireless advocate” for Jewish people, adding that he was a warm friend and spirited antagonist. His tenure at the ADL was marked by a commitment to addressing issues of anti-Semitism while also engaging in contentious discussions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Controversial Stances and Criticism
Foxman’s unwavering support for Israel also drew criticism, particularly from Palestinian rights advocates who accused the ADL of conflating legitimate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. This was further exacerbated during recent escalations in Gaza, where he defended Israel's military actions while also advocating for humanitarian considerations.
In a July 2025 post on social media, Foxman remarked, "What is happening in Gaza is tragic. But it is not Genocide. And it is not illegal," illustrating his complex stance on Israel's military policies. Weeks before his death, he also expressed support for military actions against Iran, praising both former President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A Voice in a Changing America
Despite his prominent role, Foxman often voiced concern about the changing dynamics of support for Israel within the United States. In recent discussions, he pointed out the rise of anti-Semitism across both ends of the political spectrum and expressed worries about the diminishing support for Israel among younger Americans.
Tributes and Remembrances
Following the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from Israeli officials and leaders worldwide. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed his sorrow, calling Foxman a "towering voice against anti-Semitism" who devoted his life to the Jewish community. Israeli President Isaac Herzog honored him as a "legendary leader" whose passionate advocacy left a lasting impact on the Jewish people.
Foxman’s contributions to Jewish advocacy and his complex legacy will continue to influence discussions on anti-Semitism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the years to come.
