Violence Erupts After Football Match in Libya: Government Building Torched

Clashes in Libya after a football match led to injuries and a government building being set on fire. The Presidential Council demands justice.

Unrest After Football Match in Libya

Violence erupted in Libya after a football match between Al-Ittihad SCSC and Asswehly SC, resulting in several injuries and the arson of a government building in Tripoli. The clashes, which began in the town of Tarhuna, some 80 kilometers south of Tripoli, highlight the increasing tensions surrounding football rivalries in the region.

Match Suspension Sparks Violence

The incident took place on Thursday during a match that was held behind closed doors. The game was suspended shortly before the final whistle as Al-Ittihad’s players vehemently protested against a penalty decision they believed should have been awarded in their favor. This led to a furious reaction from fans, resulting in clashes between supporters and security forces outside the stadium.

According to the Libyan news agency LANA, the protests quickly escalated, igniting chaos as fans confronted police, seeking to voice their anger over the match's officiating.

Government Headquarters Attacked

In the aftermath of the violence, the Libyan Presidential Council reported that their headquarters in Tripoli was attacked, stating, "People attacked the council of ministers’ headquarters with acts of sabotage and arson." Fortunately, the fire was contained swiftly, preventing further damage.

The council condemned these attacks and emphasized the necessity for accountability, calling for an investigation into the "unfortunate events." They urged citizens to resolve grievances through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.

Calls for Legal Resolution

In a statement, the Libyan Presidential Council highlighted that feelings of injustice should be addressed through proper legal channels and not through violent expression. Such incidents raise serious concerns about public safety and the need to foster a culture of peaceful engagement in sports and other social events in Libya.

As investigations proceed, authorities face the challenge of addressing both the fans’ frustrations and the safety of public institutions in the face of such escalating tensions related to football rivalry.
