WNBA Coach Sandy Brondello Suspended for Inappropriate Comment
Sandy Brondello, coach of Toronto Tempo, suspended for calling Angel Reese a 'protected species' during a game. Apologizes for her harmful comment.
WNBA Coach Sandy Brondello Faces Suspension
Sandy Brondello, the head coach of the WNBA's Toronto Tempo, has been handed a one-game suspension due to making an inappropriate remark during a game against the Atlanta Dream. The controversy erupted after Brondello referred to player Angel Reese as a "protected species" while expressing frustration with officiating following an injury incident during the game.
Incident Details
During the Tempo's 111-92 loss to the Dream, the broadcast captured Brondello's voice addressing the officials after player Nyara Sabally was injured following contact with Angel Reese. The use of the term "protected species" raised immediate eyebrows and sparked outcry. This term, while common in Australian sports rhetoric to criticize perceived preferential treatment for certain players, carries a derogatory connotation in the U.S., particularly towards Black individuals.
League Response and Suspension
On Saturday, the WNBA issued a statement emphasizing that it expects all coaches and team personnel to maintain professionalism and respect. Following this incident, Brondello will miss the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces on Monday. In her apology posted on social media, she expressed regret for her choice of words and acknowledged the harm her comment may have caused, especially to Black women within the league.
Brondello stated, "Angel, I’m sorry. Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you."
Public Reactions and Apology
In the aftermath of the comment, Angel Reese took to social media to respond, posting "ARE WE SURPRISED?!" along with a clown emoji, highlighting her disapproval of Brondello's remark. Brondello, acknowledging the impact of her words, further expressed, "I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended... I have a lot of respect for you as both a player and a person, and I sincerely apologize to you, your teammates, and the Dream organization for my comment."
Brondello's Coaching Background
Sandy Brondello is in her inaugural season as head coach of the expansion team, Toronto Tempo. Previously, she has had a successful coaching career in the WNBA since 2014, winning titles with teams such as Phoenix and New York. The incident highlights the challenges and sensitivities surrounding language in sports, especially regarding race and gender.
As Brondello navigates the consequences of her comments, the WNBA remains committed to fostering an environment of respect and equality on and off the court.
