2026 NFL Schedule Expected to Release in Mid-May Amid Negotiations

The NFL is aiming for a May 12-14 release for the 2026 schedule, but delays could push the announcement back to May 19-21.

Anticipated Release of the 2026 NFL Schedule

The NFL is gearing up for the release of its 2026 schedule, with officials targeting dates between May 12 and May 14. However, there is a possibility that the schedule announcement could be delayed until the following week, between May 19 and May 21. Despite the uncertainty, the league remains optimistic about finalizing the schedule by mid-May, traditionally a key timeframe for fans eagerly awaiting game details.

Factors Influencing the Release Timeline

Mike North, the NFL's vice president of broadcast planning, has indicated that while the league aims for a release on either May 13 or 14, negotiations surrounding a new game package may postpone the finalization. Previous years have seen similar delays, with the NFL opting to keep fans in suspense until just days before the announcement.

"There’s no real magic to May 12, 13, or 14, but NFL fans know we've typically stayed around that timeframe," said North during a recent podcast appearance. He pointed out that pushing back the announcement is not unprecedented, noting that the league's announcements in 2023 and 2024 were made shortly before the release dates, allowing fans limited preparation time.

Reasons for Potential Delays

The current negotiations for a five-game special package, which includes international matchups and key holiday games, are pivotal in determining the timeline. These discussions, including talks with YouTube, could influence when the NFL decides to announce its full slate of games. If these negotiations are prolonged or unforeseen events occur, like significant player trades, the schedule could face further adjustments.

Commissioner Approval as a Key Factor

A primary reason for the delay in officially announcing the release date lies with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The final schedule is not confirmed until Goodell gives his approval. "If he isn't satisfied with the presented schedule, it won't go out, regardless of the targeted release date," North explained, emphasizing the rigorous process involved in ensuring the schedule meets league standards.

Fans will be keen to know which teams will face off in the 272-game regular season as soon as the schedule is made public. All 32 teams' home-and-away opponents have been determined and can already be previewed, but exact timings and match dates remain under wraps.

In summary, while anticipation builds around the NFL's 2026 schedule, fans should prepare for potential updates as the league navigates the final steps of its planning process. With a goal firmly set for mid-May, the NFL's ability to meet this deadline will depend on the smooth conclusion of ongoing negotiations and Commissioner Goodell's approval of the final schedule.
