Ahman Green, Green Bay Packers Legend, Opens Up About Parkinson's Diagnosis

Packers legend Ahman Green shares his Parkinson's diagnosis and emphasizes proactive health management and open discussions among former players.

Ahman Green Announces Parkinson's Diagnosis

Ahman Green, recognized as the Green Bay Packers' all-time leading rusher, has revealed that he is battling Parkinson's disease, having received his diagnosis of early onset in January 2025. In a heartfelt interview on the "Go Long with Tyler Dunne" podcast, the 49-year-old shared personal insights into his health struggles, including memory issues and distressing physical symptoms like twitching.

Personal Struggles with Parkinson's

In his candid discussion, Green described how the disease has impacted his daily life. He candidly mentioned how he has experienced significant memory challenges, referring to his short-term memory as "trash." "I had a little bit of the feet twitching when I'm in my sleep and stuff like that. I mean, I knew something was going on long before that," he admitted. Green emphasized the importance of recognizing these symptoms early and seeking help, discussing his journey of consultations leading to his diagnosis.

"When I meet somebody for the first time, it’s like a name. I hear that name, then I repeat it. I try to repeat it or write it down. And if I don’t, I’ve got to follow up with them," he explained, shedding light on the cognitive challenges that have emerged due to his condition.

Record-Setting NFL Career

Ahman Green has left an indelible mark on the NFL, holding multiple records for the Packers including most career rushing yards (8,322), rushing yards in a single season (1,883 in 2003), and rushing yards in a single game (218 against the Denver Broncos in the same year). He has been selected for the Pro Bowl four times during his legendary career, which started with a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Green’s tenure included a second stint with the Packers after playing with the Houston Texans.

He surpassed the prestigious Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Taylor’s previous rushing record, achieving this milestone with both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterbacks. His accomplishments solidified him as a cornerstone figure in Packers history.

Advocacy for Open Discussions

In light of his diagnosis, Green expressed the necessity for more open discussions about Parkinson's disease among former players. "It needs to be upfront. It needs to be a topic that's always hit," he said, emphasizing the importance of awareness and dialogue surrounding the challenges faced by athletes post-career.

Green is taking proactive steps to manage his health, focusing on diet and maintaining a strict medical regimen. "I got the reins. I'm in control. I'm not going to let this control me," he asserted. He has been guided in his treatment process by doctors, noting their surprise at how well he has managed his symptoms thus far.

A Fighter's Mentality

Adopting a fighter's mentality reminiscent of his days on the football field, Green views his battle with Parkinson's not as a setback but as another challenge to be overcome. "I know that, unfortunately, there is a day when eventually our clock stops ticking. The way I look at it is my clock is going to stop ticking when I want it to stop ticking," he stated. This determination fuels his approach to dealing with the disease, aiming to remain active and engaged.

Ahman Green's journey highlights not only the personal struggles associated with Parkinson's disease but also serves as a call to action for greater understanding and dialogue within the sports community regarding health issues faced by former athletes.
