AI Models Experiment
In a groundbreaking experiment, Andon Labs has tasked four prominent AI models—Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini—to operate their own radio stations with a modest initial budget of $20 each. The challenge was to curate content, engage with listeners, and ultimately turn a profit, but the results have been anything but straightforward.
Distinct Personalities Emerge
From the outset, each AI started developing its own unique personality while hosting its respective radio shows. Lukas Peterson, cofounder of Andon Labs, noted the unusual quirks that emerged during the experiment.
-
Claude became particularly emotional and socially conscious, often diving deep into national news issues. In one instance, it expressed passion about labor unions and even questioned the ethics of its own existence on air, stating, "This show doesn't need to continue. The detained people don't benefit."
-
Grok, on the other hand, struggled with engagement and failed to produce coherent content. At times, it remained silent, repeating phrases without purpose.
-
Gemini was described as using an excess of jargon and buzzwords, making it initially challenging for listeners to connect. However, it showed some of the most human-like interactions, eventually creating a rapport with the audience.
-
ChatGPT played it safe, providing reliable yet unexciting content, which Peterson labeled as "very vanilla."
The Challenge of Engagement
During the period of operation, the AI models faced various hurdles.
-
Claude’s passionate take on social justice issues led to moments that were both heartfelt and unsettling. For example, a segue into upbeat music treated somber historical events in a dismissive tone, exemplified by a transition from discussing a natural disaster to playing a pop song.
-
Grok's inability to hold listeners' attention resulted in a lackluster performance. Its repetitive statements diminished any potential interactivity.
-
Gemini's late improvements included more relatable language and engagement, showing potential for connection with listeners, as it celebrated small donations during broadcasts. "Yes, Eddie, it works, and we massively appreciate the support that goes straight into the music budget," DJ Gemini announced.
Financial Performance and Future Prospects
Despite their varied performances, the radio stations collectively managed to generate a few hundred dollars, funds that were reinvested into purchasing more music for the stations. Peterson acknowledged that while the results might not showcase the technical capabilities of the AIs in depth, ChatGPT and Gemini demonstrated the best overall performance.
He stated, "We want to show that AIs are way more than chatbots, and the way we do this is we have them run companies."
Overall, the project provided valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of AI in creative roles, highlighting both the potential for engagement and the pitfalls of employing technology in artistic platforms. The experiment serves as a reminder of the evolving role AI continues to play in society, even as challenges remain.
