Alabama Crimson Tide Achieves Historic Milestones at ASWA Awards

The Alabama Crimson Tide on SI/BamaCentral celebrates historic achievements at the ASWA Awards, marking milestones for female leadership in journalism.

Historic Achievements at ASWA Awards

The Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) celebrated historic milestones during its 54th annual awards banquet, as Katie Windham and Christopher Walsh achieved unprecedented honors in Alabama sports journalism.

At the ceremony, held this past Sunday, Windham was inaugurated as the first female president of the ASWA, a significant step for women in the field. After serving as vice-president for two years, her ascent to the presidency marks a new chapter in the organization's history, as she becomes the 27th journalist to hold the position since its founding.

Christopher Walsh: A Legendary Writer

In a remarkable display of excellence, Christopher Walsh received the Herby Kirby Memorial Award for Story of the Year, marking him as the first journalist ever to win this prestigious award four times. Walsh expressed his gratitude, stating, "I was shocked and incredibly humbled. You look at the names of the other winners, many of the biggest journalism names in this state, and to be the first four-time winner ... there just aren't adequate words to describe how grateful I am." His previous wins in 2006, 2014, and 2020 underscore his consistent impact in sports journalism.

Additional Honors

The ASWA also recognized former journalist Josh Beam with induction into the Hall of Honor, established to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the ASWA and the sports community. Randy Kennedy, a prior Mel Allen Award recipient and ASWA Legend, was honored with the Bill Shelton Award, acknowledging his contributions to sports writing and journalism education. Additionally, Kennedy was elected the organization's vice-president.
