Amazon Closes ‘Prime’ FAST Channel in Germany and Austria

Amazon is shutting down its Prime FAST channel in Germany and Austria, just over a year after launch, amid a shifting streaming landscape.

Amazon Ends Operation of ‘Prime’ FAST Channel

Amazon has announced the closure of its 'Prime' FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) channel in Germany and Austria, effective August 1. This decision comes merely 15 months after the channel's launch, reflecting significant challenges within the competitive ad-supported streaming market.

Industry Trends and Challenges

According to industry analysts, the closure indicates broader trends as streaming platforms attempt to balance ad-supported options with traditional subscription models. Despite the growing interest in FAST channels, the reality of viewer engagement and monetization remains complex.

The competitive landscape for ad-supported streaming is intensifying, with each major streaming video on demand (SVOD) service likely considering similar additions to their platforms. Notable speculation has been circulating about Netflix introducing FAST channels, although their success is far from guaranteed, as evidenced by Amazon’s recent exit from the segment.

The Role of Wurl in Prime FAST Channel

The ‘Prime’ FAST channel was supported by Wurl, a company based in Palo Alto, California, which provides a cloud-based technology for managing content across multiple platforms. Wurl has facilitated over 4 billion monthly viewing hours globally across numerous channels, yet even this robust backing was not enough to secure success for Prime's initiative in Germany and Austria.

Future Direction: Expanding Prime Video Channels

Despite the setback with the FAST channel, Amazon has not slowed its momentum in the streaming arena. Prime Video actively pursues other lucrative aspects of its business model. Recently, it announced the expansion of its Prime Video Channels in Denmark, Norway, and Switzerland. Newly included services will comprise prominent names such as HBO Max, SkyShowtime, Apple TV, and more, enhancing the content variety for subscribers.

Elisabetta Carruba, Director of Channels for EMEA, expressed enthusiasm about these developments, stating that this expansion represents a critical move towards making Prime Video the top entertainment choice in Europe.

“Including HBO Max is significant as we continue to scale our offerings across territories where we have successfully partnered with recognized services,” said Qaisar Rafique, EVP at Warner Bros. Discovery. This strategic inclusion is anticipated to enrich the viewing experience by amalgamating bulk access to both original content and third-party services, thus appealing to a broader audience.
