At least 10 people have been confirmed dead following catastrophic flooding and landslides that have swept through southern and central China. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) is currently issuing ongoing orange alerts for heavy rain as rainfall levels escalate.

Extent of the Disaster

According to meteorologists, the affected regions encompass over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). The heavy rains have inundated multiple provinces including Hunan, Guangxi, and Hubei, prompting state authorities to initiate emergency responses. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level-IV emergency response in Hunan and Guangxi, currently the lowest tier of national disaster relief efforts. The same response level has been maintained in Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou.

Record-Breaking Rainfall Reports

The torrential rains have shattered multiple local historical records, particularly in Hubei Province. Reports indicate that 337 townships recorded over 100mm of rain within a mere 48-hour period. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the unfolding disaster has resulted in fatalities, including six people in Guangxi whose pick-up truck was swept into a swollen river, as well as three individuals who died from flash floods in a low-lying village in Hubei.

Immediate Impacts and Evacuations

Residents in cities like Jingzhou, Hubei, are facing dire conditions, with some wading through knee-deep water. On social media platforms, images depict cars nearly submerged, illustrating the extent of the flooding. Authorities have suspended operations in schools and businesses, while an evacuation response is being actively implemented in hard-hit regions of Hunan and Hubei.

Meteorological Causes for the Severe Weather

Meteorologists attribute the extreme precipitation to moisture convergence from the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. The slow movement of this weather system has contributed to significant cumulative rainfall totals. As meteorologists continue to provide forecasts, the National Meteorological Centre anticipates that severe weather will propagate east and south over the coming days, with the heaviest rainfall expected along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River starting Wednesday.
