The Bahrain Football Association has officially protested the participation of Qatar's player Asim Madbou in the recent Gulf Cup 27 match, which Qatar won 2-0. The association is questioning Madbou's eligibility based on a disciplinary action taken against him by FIFA due to a previous incident.

Background of the Disciplinary Action

Asim Madbou was handed a five-match suspension by FIFA for a violent tackle during the World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Canada, where he was red-carded for a dangerous challenge that resulted in a serious injury to opposing player Ismail Koné. Under FIFA regulations, the suspension was meant to keep him off the field for several matches, casting doubt on his participation against Bahrain in the Gulf Cup.

Official Complaint Filed

In a formal statement, Bahrain’s Secretary General, Rashid Abdullah Al-Zoabi, expressed concerns regarding the validity of Madbou’s participation without fully serving his suspension. The complaint has been lodged with the Gulf Football Association, asking for a review of the situation regarding Madbou.

"The Bahrain Football Association has submitted a formal complaint concerning the eligibility and legality of Asim Madbou’s participation during the match held on September 24, 2026," stated Al-Zoabi.

The Bahrain Football Association requests that the tournament's organizing bodies investigate whether Madbou has completed his punishment before being allowed to play.

As Qatar prepares to face Yemen in their next group match, they currently sit in second place behind the UAE, separated only by goal difference after the completion of the first round of matches.
