Brian Chesky Reveals How AI Transformed Meetings at Airbnb
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky shares how AI helped him reduce meetings by half and improve company insights, aiming to make Airbnb AI-native.
Airbnb CEO Harnesses AI to Improve Company Management
Brian Chesky, the CEO of Airbnb, recently shared his transformative experience using artificial intelligence (AI) to manage his company more effectively. Speaking at the Skift Global Forum, Chesky explained how the implementation of AI technology has not only streamlined operations but also drastically reduced the time he spends in meetings.
AI as a Management Tool
Chesky candidly admitted that many CEOs, including himself, often find themselves out of touch with the daily realities of their companies. To combat this, he embraced AI to create a sophisticated system, referred to as a "brain" or "intelligence corpus," designed to compile data from various sources. This AI is trained on thousands of documents, including 18,000 Keynote slides and 50,000 Google documents, to provide him with comprehensive insights into Airbnb’s operations.
"Most of us CEOs of big companies don't really know what the hell's going on in our companies... we have these things called meetings just to figure out what's going on," Chesky noted during his virtual appearance. By leveraging AI, he manages to keep informed without the need for extensive meetings. "I've cut my meetings in half," he added.
Achieving an AI-Native Company
Chesky's goal is clear: to position Airbnb as an AI-native company. He stated that the executive team has fully embraced this AI-driven vision. "I never wanted to be this person that it passed me by," he emphasized, expressing his determination to integrate AI deeply into the company’s culture and operations.
His commitment to AI has already yielded impressive results this year, with Airbnb launching over 600 new features—almost twice as many as in the previous year. Moreover, nearly half of the customer service requests are now being managed by AI, showcasing the technology's impact on efficiency.
Future Developments in AI at Airbnb
Looking ahead, Chesky revealed plans for the company to unveil an advanced AI booking agent, which promises to offer a richer interface compared to traditional chatbots. This initiative is part of his ongoing effort to enhance the customer experience through innovative technology solutions.
As other CEOs also begin to recognize AI's potential, a recent KPMG survey found that a significant proportion are investing in AI technology for their companies, indicating a broader shift towards incorporating AI in business operations.
