Chris Degnan, the former Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) of Snowflake, has sparked a debate in the tech industry regarding the role of forward-deployed engineers (FDEs). With companies like Google and OpenAI increasingly investing in this emerging position, Degnan raises important concerns about its viability and appeal to top engineering talent.

FDEs: A Misleading Position?

Degnan, who spent over 11 years at Snowflake before transitioning into investment and advisory roles, has termed the FDE position a "glorified professional services person." Speaking on the "20VC" podcast, he emphasized that truly skilled engineers typically prefer to work directly on core product development, rather than becoming embedded within client companies.

According to him, while the introduction of AI technologies has created a surge in demand for FDEs, many of these engineers find themselves in a precarious position. "If you're a really good engineer, you do not want to be a forward-deployed engineer," Degnan stated. "You want to work on the core product."

Concerns Over Technical Debt and Customer Dependency

Degnan's critique extends beyond mere preference. He cautioned that forward-deployed engineers often leave behind significant technical debt after building solutions for clients. These systems may encounter issues that only the original contractor knows how to handle, placing clients in a difficult position once their support ends. "There’s a lot of technical debt that forward-deployed engineers are going to leave, and there’s a lot of risk," he added.

As businesses move to embed AI capabilities into their operations, the pressure to adopt the FDE model has increased sharply. An Indeed report highlighted that job postings for FDEs surged by a staggering 5,230% between January 2025 and April 2026. Major tech firms are forming new branches dedicated solely to this role, with OpenAI even establishing its own OpenAI Deployment Company, substantially funded to facilitate this transition.

Major Tech Companies Embrace the Model

Tech giants like Google are proactively building their FDE teams, marking a significant trend in hiring practices. Companies are looking to ensure their teams adopt AI tools effectively, with some organizations, such as Stripe, utilizing the FDE model internally. Degnan, however, remains skeptical, firmly stating that core engineers remain unmatched in their capabilities compared to their forward-deployed counterparts.

"The forward-deployed engineer is not as good as the core engineer that's building the core product," Degnan concluded, providing what some might consider a controversial, yet valid perspective in the evolving landscape of engineering roles influenced by advancements in AI.
