Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick Reports Over $250 Million in Income

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick disclosed over $250 million in income last year, largely from financial firms he stepped away from during his appointment

Lutnick's Impressive Earnings in 2025

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has disclosed earnings exceeding $250 million for the last fiscal year, according to his newly released financial disclosure for 2025. Most of these earnings stem from financial companies that he distanced himself from when he assumed office under the Trump administration. This report, a comprehensive 74 pages, reveals the extensive financial landscape Lutnick navigated during his inaugural year in government.

Major Income Sources

The lion's share of Lutnick's income came from a substantial $192 million distribution from Cantor Fitzgerald, a global financial services company he has led for many years. This figure is categorized as a tax distribution and is in accordance with the ethics agreement he signed upon his confirmation as commerce secretary.

In addition to the Cantor Fitzgerald distribution, Lutnick’s income also included:

  • $4.2 million in salary and bonuses from Newmark, a commercial real estate firm.
  • $14.1 million from BGC Group, a global financial brokerage and technology company that Lutnick chaired.
  • Further, he received more than $5 million from BGC restricted stock units.

Despite stepping away from leadership positions, Lutnick's wealth keeps him as one of the most affluent members of the Cabinet, although it pales in comparison to the president's reported earnings of over $2 billion in the same year.

Asset Management and Sales

To comply with ethical standards, Lutnick has divested from many of his prior investments. During the past year, he sold at least $259 million worth of assets, which included significant stakes in major firms:

  • Over $50 million in Newmark, BGC, Cantor Fitzgerald, and CF Group Management.

His financial maneuvers did not stop here; Lutnick also reported around $166 million in new investments, primarily in Treasury and broad market funds. Included in these investments were purchas of over $50 million in an S&P 500 Exchange-Traded Fund and investments in Fidelity Treasury funds exceeding $50 million each.

Ongoing Financial Interests

Notably, while Lutnick has stepped down from various leadership roles across many organizations, he still maintains approximately 40 active positions associated with trusts, property companies, and other entities. This ongoing involvement underscores his continuous interest and influence in the financial sector, even as he fulfills his duties as Commerce Secretary.

In summary, Howard Lutnick’s financial disclosure not only showcases his immense earnings and thorough financial activities but also highlights the complexities and realities faced by high-ranking government officials amid stringent ethical regulations.
