Criterion Collection to Release 'Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut'

The Criterion Collection has officially announced the release of Guillermo Del Toro's director's cut of the acclaimed film, Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut. Set to hit shelves on October 27, 2026, this new version adds an additional eight minutes of footage to the original, elevating the total runtime to 2 hours and 38 minutes.

A Celebrated Adaptation

Based on Mary Shelley’s timeless novel, Del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein opened in theaters on October 24, 2025, before making its debut on Netflix on November 7, 2025. The film presents a unique perspective on the story of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, who creates The Creature, played by Jacob Elordi, only to abandon him. This distinct take quickly earned the film nine Academy Award nominations and resulted in three wins, including Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Release Details and Formats

Available for pre-order, Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut will be released in multiple formats: 4K + Blu-ray for $47.96, Blu-ray for $39.96, and DVD for $23.96. Each of the 4K + Blu-ray and Blu-ray versions will consist of two discs, containing both the original theatrical version and the extended cut. Fans can look forward to enjoying the 4K extended cut with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack and enhanced visuals presented in Dolby Vision HDR.

Bonus Features and Commentary

In addition to the added eight minutes, the releases will feature an array of bonus content. Notably, both the 4K and Blu-ray editions will include an all-new commentary track by Del Toro himself, providing insight into his directorial vision. Other exciting bonus features include:

  • The Anatomy Lesson: Director’s Cut – a new documentary
  • The Parlour – a featurette with discussions among the cast and crew
  • Q&A sessions moderated by Martin Scorsese and Patti Smith
  • An interview with composer Alexandre Desplat
  • An essay by history scholar Christopher Frayling

The Criterion Collection has confirmed that the packaging will also sport new artwork featuring Isaac and Elordi by Denver Balbaboco.

With its extended runtime and rich bonus material, Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut promises to be a rewarding addition for fans of Del Toro's work and horror cinema enthusiasts alike.
