An explosive attack on the Pan-American Highway in the Cauca province of Colombia led to a tragic loss of life over the weekend. According to local authorities, at least seven people were killed and around 20 injured in what is being described as an indiscriminate assault on civilians.

Condemnation from Local Officials

Governor Octavio Guzman of Cauca expressed his outrage at the attack, labeling it a heinous act against the civilian population. In a statement shared on social media, Guzman called for a "decisive and sustained response" from the government to combat the escalating violence attributed to criminal groups, particularly those linked to dissident factions of the FARC rebel group.

Guzman shared video footage of the aftermath, which revealed mangled vehicles and debris scattered across the highway, along with the presence of ambulances responding to the emergency.

"Cauca cannot continue facing this barbarity alone," Guzman stated, referring to a string of attacks in various municipalities, including El Tambo and Caloto, calling for immediate action against what he termed a "terrorist escalation."

Link to Drug Trafficking and FARC Dissidents

The incident follows a series of violent confrontations connected to dissident groups that split from FARC after a peace agreement was reached with the Colombian government in 2016. This alarming trend of violence is believed to be fueled by the ongoing drug trade in the region.

In response to the explosion, Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez convened a security council in Cali to analyze the situation and formulate a strategy to enhance regional safety.

Presidential Response

President Gustavo Petro responded to this unfortunate event by attributing the violence to powerful criminal organizations attempting to exert control through intimidation. He identified a fugitive drug trafficker known by the alias Ivan Mordisco as a leading figure in the attacks and called for global cooperation in dismantling these criminal entities.

"I want the maximum worldwide pursuit against this narco-terrorist group," Petro declared, emphasizing the need for international solidarity in combating this escalating threat.

The tragic loss of life in Cauca reinforces the urgent need for increased government intervention to safeguard civilians against the rising tide of violence linked to Colombia's complex relationship with the drug trade and armed groups.
