Della Maddalena Backs Garry for Title Shot Against Makhachev

Jack Della Maddalena champions Ian Garry for a title shot against Islam Makhachev, citing his strong performance and ranking.

Della Maddalena's Support for Garry

In a recent interview, Jack Della Maddalena expressed strong support for Ian Machado Garry as the frontrunner for a title fight against UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. Della Maddalena, a notable contender in the division himself, asserted that Garry’s achievements in the octagon make him the standout candidate for a shot at the championship.

Garry’s Impressive Track Record

Della Maddalena highlighted Garry’s remarkable rise to prominence, noting his current ranking as No. 2 in the official UFC welterweight standings. Garry has laid a strong claim to a title shot with his recent victories, including defeating former champion Belal Muhammad and Carlos Prates. His only setback came from a narrow decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov, a fight that was taken on short notice.

Della Maddalena mentioned, "You'd think Ian Garry, in terms of current competition, has the most deserving resume. He's put together a strong record over the last few years."

The Competition for the Title

While many eyes are on Garry, two other names frequently come up in the discussion for Makhachev’s next challenger: Kamaru Usman and Michael Morales. Morales recently made headlines with a spectacular knockout of Sean Brady, showcasing his explosive potential as a contender. Meanwhile, Usman, though currently ranked No. 7, has a legacy as a former champion that adds weight to his case for a title shot.

Della Maddalena acknowledged the differing merits of each contender, saying, "All three of those guys present different challenges. If any of them got the fight, I think all three are pretty deserving. However, I believe Garry deserves it the most."

Legacy vs. Recent Performance

Usman, a legendary figure in the welterweight division, is viewed as one of the greatest to have ever competed in the sport. Many argue that his storied career should grant him another chance at the title. Della Maddalena, however, reaffirmed his stance on Garry, stating, "I would like to see it go to Ian."

As the UFC navigates its options for Makhachev's next title defense, the debate continues over who deserves the opportunity in a division filled with talent and potential.
