Diego 'Big Balls' Luna: A Rising Star Making Waves for USMNT's 2026 World Cup Squad

Diego Luna's tenacity and performance have impressed USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino as he vies for a 2026 World Cup spot.

Diego Luna's Impressive Journey

Diego "Big Balls" Luna, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder from Real Salt Lake, is increasingly becoming a pivotal player in the US men's national soccer team (USMNT) setup ahead of the much-anticipated 2026 World Cup. Renowned for his resilience, Luna has impressed coach Mauricio Pochettino, particularly following a recent friendly where he played through a broken nose to provide a crucial assist.

Grit and Determination on Display

During a January camp friendly, Luna faced a major setback when he broke his nose but insisted on continuing to play. Pochettino remarked on this display of grit, stating, "I was very surprised, because it was broke, you know? ... The first action, assist, and we score. I said, 'Big balls.'" This injury-defying performance not only showcased Luna's mental toughness but also solidified his position as a strong contender for the upcoming World Cup squad.

Reflecting on that moment, Luna shared, "I’m not really tired of it, but I think now that’s something that’s always gonna be a part of who I am. Hopefully, it is because if it is, that means that I get to have continuous success with the national team." With such determination, he aims to make his mark on USMNT history.

Aims for World Cup Selection

This season, Luna has put together an impressive record, having scored three goals and provided one assist in seven appearances for Real Salt Lake. His recent performance has been instrumental in helping his team rise within the MLS Western Conference standings. Despite missing critical international fixtures in March due to fitness issues, which left him frustrated, Luna remains focused on his club commitments, emphasizing, "I think I keep it very focused daily ... until it’s time for that World Cup announcement."

As a veteran presence despite his young age, Luna's leadership qualities are emerging. He is embracing the challenge of mentoring younger teammates such as 19-year-old Zavier Gozo and 18-year-old Aiden Herzarkhani. In his words, "I’m definitely more of a letting my work on the field speak, and contributing to the team that way." This growth in leadership is vital as he takes on more responsibilities within the squad.

A Rising Star

Outside of his impressive on-field performances, Luna is garnering attention off the field as well. He’s recognized as one of the faces of Major League Soccer, now involved in a promotional partnership with Head & Shoulders. He expressed, "It’s very surreal, I’m grateful, very blessed... I think that’s super exciting." His commitment to becoming a professional soccer player is reflected in his work ethic and the sacrifices he has made to achieve his goals.

Luna is working diligently towards his ambitions of securing a place on the USMNT roster for the World Cup and potentially moving to Europe for his career. As he continues to impress with his performances and resilience, he is making Mauricio Pochettino's decision-making process increasingly challenging. With the roster announcement looming, Diego Luna remains focused on performing well for Real Salt Lake while keeping his World Cup dream alive.
