Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart Make MLB History in Reds' Win Over Rockies
Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart shine in Reds' win, making MLB history with record-setting performances against the Rockies.
Reds Triumph Behind Historic Performances
The Cincinnati Reds secured a stunning victory against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night, powered by a stellar performance from rookie sensation Elly De La Cruz. His emphatic contributions not only clinched the win but also etched his name in MLB record books by reaching milestones not seen since before 1900.
De La Cruz’s Remarkable Night
In an impressive display, De La Cruz recorded a 3-for-4 night at the plate, launching his 10th home run of the season and driving in four RBIs. This performance marks him as the first player in MLB history since 1900 to hit ten or more home runs and steal eight or more bases before the turn of May. Alongside Sal Stewart, who added a solid double to the scoreboard, the duo combined for a record-setting 53 RBIs this season, tying them with Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo for the most combined RBIs among teammates under 25 years old.
De La Cruz’s hot streak firmly puts him in the spotlight as one of the most promising players in the league. He is currently hitting .291 with an OPS of .952, showcasing both his batting prowess and remarkable athletic ability on the field.
Sal Stewart Shines in His Rookie Campaign
Sal Stewart also had a noteworthy performance, going 1-for-4 with a double, and he is enjoying a productive start to his rookie season with a batting average of .290 and an OPS of .979. His presence in the lineup has been beneficial not only for his performance but for De La Cruz, who noted that pitchers are hesitant to challenge Stewart, allowing him to see more favorable pitches.
"There is a lot of good energy," De La Cruz stated after the game. "I want him to hit lots of home runs and we are going to keep doing it."
Manager’s Praise and Team Momentum
After the game, Reds manager Terry Francona lauded De La Cruz for his defensive skills as well. He praised two standout plays, notably a remarkable defensive effort that showcased De La Cruz’s agility and quick thinking.
"That play he made to his right with a runner on first was just as physically impressive as you're ever going to see," said Francona. "The double play he executed was also critical and required immense skill."
With this victory, the Reds have extended their winning streak, claiming eight victories in their last ten games and have impressively won four consecutive series. The synergy between De La Cruz and Stewart has become pivotal to the team's recent ascendance in the league.
As the season progresses, the excitement among Reds fans continues to build, with hopes set high for the team's potential, largely thanks to the electrifying performances from their young stars.
