Emma Brandt Leads Bloom-Carroll to State Championship with Stellar Performance
Emma Brandt's dominant pitching performance leads Bloom-Carroll to the Ohio Division III state championship game with a 2-1 victory.
Stellar Pitching Sends Bulldogs to Championship
AKRON, Ohio – Emma Brandt delivered a standout performance in the OHSAA Division III state semifinals, pitching a one-hitter and striking out 10 batters to lead the Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Greenville team. This significant win propels the Bulldogs to their first state championship game appearance since 2015, where they will face Louisville.
Perfect Until the Last Inning
Through six innings, Brandt was flawless, maintaining a perfect game against a Greenville offense known for scoring over ten runs per contest. However, the perfect game ended abruptly at the start of the seventh inning when Greenville shortstop Leah Force launched a home run over the left field fence, narrowing Bloom-Carroll’s lead to 2-1.
Brandt, undeterred by the home run, quickly regained her focus, retiring the next three batters with a combination of skillful pitching, including a pivotal groundout and two strikeouts. "I just kept throwing. I focused more on my spin than my speed, and it worked," Brandt noted after the game.
Contributing on Offense
In addition to her impressive pitching, Brandt made her presence felt offensively. She drove in the first run for Bloom-Carroll in the opening frame with an RBI triple and later scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by catcher Addison Brown. This offensive contribution was vital, as it set the tone for the game early on.
Strong Chemistry Behind Home Plate
The success of Brandt and Brown can be attributed to their exceptional chemistry as cousins. "We have really good chemistry, we're cousins, we're like best friends. I trust her so much," Brown commented on their relationship and performance. This bond allowed them to communicate effectively throughout the game, fostering a supportive environment that contributed to the team's success.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, the Bulldogs are just one win away from claiming the state title. Head coach Chris Lucas expressed confidence in Brandt, saying, "I knew that two runs with Emma out there, it was pretty much a good done deal." Brandt's performance over the past weeks has solidified her as the lead pitcher for Bloom-Carroll, demonstrating her ability to handle pressure in critical moments.
As they prepare for the championship game, the Bulldogs aim to leverage the momentum gained from this hard-fought victory, hoping to bring home the trophy, marking a significant milestone for the program.
