Etihad Rail's passenger services will connect all emirates, reducing travel time significantly and offering luxury experiences.
Etihad Rail Unveils Plans for Passenger Services
Imagine a future where you can traverse all seven emirates in comfort, without the stress of traffic jams and long drives. Etihad Rail, the national railway operator of the UAE, is set to bring this vision to life by launching its passenger services this year.
What is Etihad Rail?
Established in 2009 under Federal Law No. 2, Etihad Rail oversees the development, construction, and operation of the UAE’s national railway network. The project, financed by the Federal Government and the Government of Abu Dhabi, spans approximately 900 kilometers from Ghuweifat at the Saudi Arabian border to Fujairah on the east coast. By connecting all seven emirates, the railway will not only serve passenger needs but also enhance freight services, projecting over 36.5 million passengers annually by 2030.
Project Progress and Future Phases
The UAE government announced the UAE Railways Programme in 2021, aimed at modernizing the railway sector as part of the nation’s broader development initiatives. The program rolls out in phases:
Phase 1: Freight Services
Operational since 2016, this phase of Etihad Rail has successfully transported over 30 million tonnes of granulated sulfur, reducing road congestion significantly.
Phase 2: Passenger Services
With the completion of the 900km rail line in 2023, Etihad Rail is gearing up to launch passenger services, initially connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai, followed by routes to Fujairah.
Phase 3: Integrated Transport Solutions
Future developments will include a network of light rail and smart transportation solutions to seamlessly connect with existing public transport systems, enhancing urban mobility.
