In a landmark decision, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added bemotrizinol to the list of approved sunscreen filters, marking the first addition in over two decades. This new ingredient has been widely used in Europe for years and is celebrated for its superior UV protection capabilities.

What is Bemotrizinol?

Bemotrizinol is a chemical UV filter designed to offer extensive protection against ultraviolet rays, specifically long-wave UVA rays, which are the most associated with skin cancer development. Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, explains, "It provides broader protection against UV light compared to existing chemical filters available in the U.S.".

Furthermore, bemotrizinol is noted for being gentler on the skin compared to many traditional sunscreens, making it suitable even for individuals with sensitive skin. Dermatologist Ife J. Rodney, the founding director of Eternal Dermatology Aesthetics, states that this ingredient will not easily irritate many skin types.

Advantages of the New Sunscreen Filter

Photostability

One of bemotrizinol's most significant advantages is its photostability; it does not degrade quickly in sunlight, thus providing longer-lasting protection. This feature is a breakthrough for sunscreen technology, as consistent efficacy throughout sun exposure is crucial for effective sun protection. "It may last longer on the skin," adds Rodney, emphasizing bemotrizinol’s potential to enhance overall sunscreen effectiveness.

Compatibility with Other Ingredients

In addition to its protective properties, bemotrizinol is compatible with other sunscreen ingredients, allowing for higher SPF formulations at lower doses. Gary Goldenberg, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, highlights this aspect, calling the FDA's approval "excellent news and long overdue." The approval of such an advanced filter could lead to better overall formulations for sun protection.

Dermatologists' Enthusiastic Response

Experts in dermatology express overwhelming support for this development. Zeichner finds the news "extremely exciting", stating that bemotrizinol's introduction will likely lead to a decrease in skin cancer incidences, particularly melanoma. Goldenberg reinforces this positive outlook, noting how this addition finally brings U.S. sunscreen formulations in line with those already available in Europe, which are often praised for being safer and more elegant.

Availability of Products Containing Bemotrizinol

While the FDA's announcement has paved the way for bemotrizinol’s incorporation into sunscreens, products containing this ingredient are not yet on the market in the United States. However, it is expected that manufacturers have been preparing formulations to introduce as soon as possible. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary has emphasized that Americans deserve access to the best over-the-counter products available, pointing to the ongoing evolution of sunscreen technology.

As dermatologists eagerly anticipate the launch of bemotrizinol-containing sunscreens, they already recommend other SPF products currently approved by the Women’s Health beauty team as interim options.
