Ford Issues Massive Recall for Over 500,000 Broncos Due to Fire Risk

Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting over 500,000 Bronco SUVs due to a potentially hazardous wiring defect that may lead to engine fires. This recall encompasses Bronco models manufactured from 2021 to 2026, including the high-performance Bronco Raptor.

Details of the Wiring Issue

According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect involves the vehicle's wiring harness located within the engine compartment. This defect can potentially cause a short circuit, creating excessive heat or sparks, which raises the risk of fire. Regulators noted that affected drivers might first notice smoke emanating from their air vents or receive a warning message on their dashboard before encountering flames from the engine compartment.

Ford has already identified at least 15 documented incidents of fires related to this issue; however, the automaker has reported no injuries associated with these events.

Recall Notification and Repairs

Affected vehicle owners can expect to receive official notifications regarding the recall on August 24. Ford has assured customers that necessary repairs, which involve the installation of improved wiring compartment coverings, will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners.

The Broader Context of Ford's Recalls

This recall contributes to a staggering number of recalls issued by Ford in 2026 alone, which has reached a total of 60 and stands as the highest of any automaker this year. This follows a record-setting pace in 2025 when Ford issued 153 recalls concerning a total of 12.9 million vehicles, outpacing competitors like Chrysler and General Motors.

Ford's continued challenges with recalls began earlier this year when it announced a recall involving over 4 million vehicles due to a software glitch affecting its popular F-series trucks. Additionally, in April, the company recalled 1.4 million F-150 trucks for a defect that could lead to unexpected downshifting, further raising safety concerns.
