In an exciting development for Florida high school football, Tony Gilbert, a former NFL linebacker known for his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons, has been appointed as the new head football coach at Atlantic Coast High School. This announcement promises a fresh chapter for the Stingrays as they look to build upon a 4-6 record from the last season.
Transitioning from Coordinator to Head Coach
Previously serving as the team’s defensive coordinator, Gilbert has demonstrated a deep commitment to developing young talent. The school made the announcement on their Instagram page, expressing enthusiasm for Gilbert’s extensive football experience which includes a significant collegiate background at the University of Georgia and coaching roles at various Division 1 programs.
According to the school's statement, "Coach Gilbert brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to Atlantic Coast." Under his leadership, the athletic program is poised to gain the necessary momentum to qualify for the Florida High School Athletic Association state playoffs, which they narrowly missed last season.
A Look at Gilbert's Background
Gilbert's journey in football began at Macon Central High School in Georgia, where he excelled and later earned All-SEC honors at the University of Georgia. During his college career, he led the Bulldogs with 114 tackles and showcased his defensive skills significantly, prompting his selection in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.
Over his seven-year NFL career, Gilbert played pivotal roles at both the Jaguars and Falcons. After wrapping up his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, starting back at Georgia before moving on to other programs such as Auburn and UCF. Most recently, he served as the assistant linebackers coach for the Jaguars prior to taking the reins at Atlantic Coast.
Focus on Key Players for Upcoming Season
With the Stingrays set to return key player Rocco Manago, who threw for over 1,000 yards last season, Gilbert’s leadership will be essential for refining offensive strategies and enhancing team dynamics. Other promising players like Jaylen Pena, alongside defensive stalwarts including Desmond Malpress and Israel Hayward, will benefit from Gilbert’s expertise as they aim for a successful season ahead.
"We are excited about this new direction with Coach Gilbert and the potential to revive this program," Atlantic Coast Athletic Director said. As Gilbert embarks on this new journey, the community eagerly anticipates improvements as the Stingrays head into the upcoming season.
With his extensive background both on and off the field, Tony Gilbert is set to inspire the next generation of football players at Atlantic Coast High School while aiming to achieve greater success on the field.
