From Burnout to Business: A Teacher's Journey to Surf Camp in Sri Lanka

After burnout in teaching, Rebekah Kellow's sabbatical led her to establish a surf camp in Sri Lanka, redefining her life as a surfer and entrepreneur.

Finding a New Path After Burnout

At 57, Rebekah Kellow found herself at a crossroads, facing burnout after decades of teaching. As she approached her 50s, the stress of her job in Guernsey, a small British island, began to take a toll on her health and happiness. Rather than conforming to the norm of returning to her classroom each September, she took a bold step.

Motivated by her growing dissatisfaction, Kellow embarked on a yearlong sabbatical in 2022, where she would ultimately discover a new direction in life.

The Transformative Year

Kellow's sabbatical was not just a break; it became a transformational year. Early on, while training to become a surf instructor in Sri Lanka, she realized her previous life as a teacher no longer fit her evolving identity.

"I had been a teacher for so long and felt like I needed to explore more of what life had to offer," she reflected. Kellow had planned a long journey traveling around the world, but upon falling in love with Sri Lanka and its culture, she decided to make a permanent change.

Kellow, who had previously viewed herself solely through the lens of her teaching career, embraced her potential to start anew. After completing her surf instructor course and spending time volunteering in Tanzania, she recognized that retirement was not the end—but a beginning.

Launching Wanderlust Surf Camp

In 2024, Kellow took a leap into entrepreneurship. She co-opened a spa and yoga studio in Sri Lanka, ultimately leading her to found Wanderlust Surf Camp. Set in Arugam Bay, a famous beach destination on the island’s eastern coast, her surf camp offers weeklong packages which include accommodation and surf lessons.

"I am no longer a teacher nearing the end of my career; I am now a vibrant surfer and a businesswoman," Kellow said, describing her new life filled with energy and purpose. The camp can host up to 16 guests, providing an immersive experience with sunrise surf sessions and sunset catch-ups.

A Thriving New Life

Kellow's daily life at Wanderlust Surf Camp is distinctly different from her past. Mornings start early with surfing, followed by breakfast, and then a leisurely afternoon, reflecting the joyful lifestyle that contrasts sharply with her previous stresses as an educator.

Kellow's journey highlights the power of reinvention and the importance of mental health. Had she not embraced her sabbatical, she questions whether she would have remained content in her previous role, possibly resigned to a slower descent into retirement.

An Invitation to Adventure

Now, with a sense of freedom and fulfillment, Kellow embodies the spirit of adventure and has truly redefined herself post-50. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the possibilities that lie in choosing a new path, encouraging others feeling trapped in their routine jobs to explore their potential. Kellow now indulges in a life where she determines her own schedule and interactions, free from burnout and disappointment.

In a world where many feel the weight of conventional expectations, Rebekah Kellow's leap into a new lifestyle at Wanderlust Surf Camp is a testament to resilience and the joy of starting fresh at any age.
