In Liberia, a nation steeped in rich oral traditions, young people are transforming how stories are told and preserved. What once flowed through the mouths of elders in community gatherings is now being captured on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and podcasts. This evolution reflects a significant shift toward digital storytelling that not only preserves cultural heritage but also adapts it to contemporary audiences.

The Role of Oral Histories

For generations, Liberia's history and culture were passed down orally, with elders acting as the custodians of community stories, traditions, and familial legacies. Patrick Burrowes, a noted Liberian historian, emphasized the critical role of these community storytellers, stating that until the civil wars, the transmission of knowledge was continuous and intact. However, the devastating impact of the civil wars between 1989 and 2003 fractured these oral transmission lines, leading to a loss of invaluable historical context and cultural wisdom.

Bilphena Decontee Yahwon, the founder of Archive Liberia, exemplifies the new wave of young Liberians committed to reconnecting with their roots. "I didn’t originally set out to tell Liberian stories. I wanted to tell my own story," Yahwon shared. Instead of gathering around the palava hut, they gather around TikTok, Facebook, podcasts and YouTube. We didn’t lose storytelling; we changed the stage.”

Despite these advancements, challenges persist.

Access and Misinformation

While crafting a digital archive of their culture, young Liberians face significant barriers, including limited internet access—only about one-third of the population is online. Moreover, misinformation poses a critical threat to preserving historical accuracy. Unlike traditional storytellers, many social media users lack the training necessary to differentiate fact from falsehood.

"Silence is a far greater threat than conversation," says Dauda. To combat misinformation, it’s crucial to encourage youth to engage in responsible storytelling and hold their narratives accountable to historical truths.

"For me, one of the biggest challenges is undoing the ahistorical accounts of our past that have dominated for so long," Yahwon reflected.
