Heat Wave Threatens Dodgers' NLDS Matchup This Weekend

Extreme heat expected this weekend may impact Dodgers' NLDS games, as temps soar to 100 degrees. Manager Roberts weighs in on conditions.

Dodgers Prepare for Heat Wave During NLDS

The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for a challenging start to their National League Division Series (NLDS) as they confront a major heat wave this weekend. The first two games of the series will be played under scorching conditions, with temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Anticipated Weather Conditions

Game 1 is set to commence at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, with the forecast predicting highs around 98 degrees, potentially climbing even higher. The mercury surge coincides with a broader heat wave enveloping Southern California, set to last over a week. According to CBS Los Angeles, Saturday is projected to be the hottest day of this predicted heat event, with added humidity making conditions even more oppressive for athletes.

In addition, forecasters suggest that the heat index, or “RealFeel,” could reach up to 105 degrees on Saturday. This kind of weather raises concerns not just for player performance but also for fan safety and comfort.

Manager Dave Roberts Weighs In

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has expressed his apprehension regarding the sweltering conditions. He noted, "I would probably prefer to play at night, but... it’s going to be a hot week, and to play at night would certainly be more beneficial." Despite the bleak forecast, Roberts remains focused on their opponent, whether it be the Atlanta Braves or the Philadelphia Phillies.

This is not the first time the team has dealt with extreme temperatures; in the 2017 World Series, they faced a steamy 103 degrees against the Houston Astros. This year, however, the added humidity will likely pose additional challenges.

Logistical Challenges of Scheduling

The Dodgers' Game 2 will follow on Sunday evening, scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium, but the prospect of shifting game times due to extreme heat raises logistical dilemmas. As one of four postseason games on that day, altering start times may prove difficult, particularly given the competing scheduling demands of the playoffs.

The Dodgers, who earned a bye in the first round, are striving for their third consecutive World Series title. As they face the heat this weekend, their focus will be on maintaining peak performance amid an unrelenting climate.
