How the 3-2-1 Workout Method Transformed My Fitness Routine

After a month on TikTok's 3-2-1 method, I found improved flexibility and endurance, but I missed the freedom of my previous workout routine.

Exploring the 3-2-1 Method for a Month

Last year, my TikTok For You Page (FYP) was flooded with debates about whether pilates or weightlifting was the superior workout. Some users claimed switching to pilates transformed their physiques, while others experienced the same results when they reverted to lifting weights. Recently, my algorithm introduced another philosophy – the 3-2-1 method.

The 3-2-1 method consists of three days of strength training, two days of pilates, and one day of cardio per week, leaving one day for rest. This approach was developed by Courteney Fisher, a NASM-CPT trainer and pilates instructor, after she found a balance in her workouts that left her feeling more energized and less inflamed.

Intrigued by the method and having developed an appreciation for pilates as a newly minted instructor, I committed to trying this regime for a month. Here’s a breakdown of my experience incorporating the 3-2-1 method into my workout routine.

Structuring My Workouts

Personalizing My Routine

The flexibility of the 3-2-1 method allows practitioners to tailor their workouts based on personal schedules, so long as they maintain the structure of three days of strength training, two days of pilates, and one cardio day. According to Fisher, utilizing progressive overload (gradually increasing workout intensity) is crucial for making progress. I approached my month with the following weekly structure:

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1

  • Day 1: Mat pilates
  • Day 2: Lower body strength
  • Day 3: Cardio (outdoor run)
  • Day 4: Lower body strength
  • Day 5: Reformer pilates
  • Day 6: Full body strength
  • Day 7: Rest

Week 2

  • Day 1: Rest
  • Day 2: Cardio (Orangetheory class)
  • Day 3: Upper body strength
  • Day 4: Lower body strength
  • Day 5: Mat pilates
  • Day 6: Lower body strength
  • Day 7: Mat pilates

Week 3

  • Day 1: Rest
  • Day 2: Lower body strength
  • Day 3: Cardio (Equinox run class)
  • Day 4: Lower body strength
  • Day 5: Lower body strength
  • Day 6: Reformer pilates and Rumble training class
  • Day 7: Reformer pilates

Week 4

  • Day 1: Cardio (Kinrgy class)
  • Day 2: Yoga
  • Day 3: Upper body strength, pickleball, and HIIT class
  • Day 4: Lower body strength
  • Day 5: Reformer pilates
  • Day 6: Lower body strength
  • Day 7: Reformer pilates

To maintain this structure, I had to plan my workouts a week in advance, ensuring I didn’t schedule back-to-back lifting sessions for the same muscle group.

Initial Success and Increasing Challenges

The First Week

Initially, the first week surpassed my expectations. With solid planning, I executed my strength and pilates workouts at home, leveraging my building's weight room and a rented reformer pilates apparatus, allowing me to engage in effective workouts without leaving my apartment. I did not experience fatigue at the end of the week despite the increased intensity of my routine, which left me mentally energized and motivated.

The Second and Third Weeks

However, by week two, I began experiencing fatigue and scheduling became more challenging. While I generally work out four times a week, this increase prompted soreness, which I managed by lowering workout intensities. I incorporated lighter weights and gentler exercises. Weeks three and four brought logistical challenges, particularly during a hectic work trip where I had to navigate various fitness classes that didn’t align with my strength and pilates goals, resulting in excessive workouts.

Discovering Benefits and Personal Preferences

By the end of the month, my motivation waned; however, I could not overlook the positive results from implementing more cardio and pilates into my routine.

Notable Improvements

  • Enhanced Flexibility: While I began with good flexibility, consistent pilates significantly improved my limberness.
  • Core Definition: The pilates routine provided visible improvements in abdominal definition, showcasing the effectiveness of the reformer classes.
  • Increased Endurance: The addition of regular cardio led to longer runs, making me feel more resilient.

Key Takeaways from My Experience

  1. Convenience Matters: Most of my workouts occurred at home, aligning with my schedule. Future endeavors with the 3-2-1 method would necessitate prioritizing convenience.
  2. Flexibility Over Structure: I found myself preferring flexible workouts. At this stage of my fitness journey, balancing workout intensity to align with my overall lifestyle seemed more beneficial than adhering to a strict regimen.
  3. Value of Variety: Although I don’t plan to continue strictly following the 3-2-1 method, I believe in continuously incorporating elements of pilates and cardio for their unique benefits.

In summary, while the 3-2-1 method offers a comprehensive approach to fitness, it is best suited for individuals who thrive on structure. If you feel drawn to this regimen and can keep up with its frequency, it could be a valuable addition to your routine. Ultimately, personal preference governs workout success, and variety may lead to sustained motivation and enjoyment.
