India's Mobile App Market Grows Significantly; Global Platforms Dominate Revenue

Despite India's booming app market, global giants like Google One and ChatGPT capture most in-app purchase revenues.

Surge in India’s Mobile App Market

India's mobile app market is experiencing a remarkable upward trajectory, with in-app purchases soaring past $300 million in the first quarter of 2026. This figure represents a substantial 33% increase compared to the previous year, according to a report by Sensor Tower. The notable growth is primarily driven by non-gaming applications, highlighting a shift in user preferences and spending habits.

Key Drivers of Growth

In the first quarter of 2026, non-gaming apps generated over $200 million in in-app purchase revenue, reflecting a 44% year-over-year increase. Popular categories such as utilities, video streaming, and generative AI have proven to be powerful contributors to this growth. As of 2025, annual in-app purchase revenue in India has skyrocketed from $520 million in 2021 to a projected $1.25 billion in 2026.

Recent trends indicate that while downloads have stabilized at approximately 25 billion annually, the time users spend on apps continues to expand. This trend not only signifies deeper engagement but also showcases an increasing willingness among users to invest in digital services.

Dominance of Global Platforms

Despite the growth in local app usage, it is the global platforms that continue to capture a significant portion of the revenue. Significant earnings are attributed to giants like Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube. In contrast, domestic players are more prevalent in the video streaming sector, with JioHotstar and SonyLIV emerging as top contenders.

In terms of downloads, applications such as ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese short-drama app FreeReels dominate the market, with local favorites like Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho also making notable appearances. This pattern indicates an evolving landscape in which user behavior continues to adapt.

A Low-Spending Market

Despite the notable revenue figures, India remains a relatively low-spending market. Analytics reveal that the country generates about $0.03 in revenue per download, a stark contrast to over $0.20 in regions like Southeast Asia and Latin America. As such, while the growth trajectory is promising, the market still faces challenges regarding monetization.

Expanding Categories and Future Potential

The rise of newer app categories is paving the way for further growth. Notably, generative AI applications witnessed a staggering 69% increase in downloads year-over-year, with ChatGPT being a frontrunner in both installs and revenue. Historically, India has served as ChatGPT’s largest market by user count, with other AI applications also gaining momentum.

Additionally, short drama platforms have observed even more impressive growth, with downloads rising over 400%. This surge underscores the potential for India's app market, which appears still to be in the early stages of its monetization journey, even as users become more willing to spend on newer app categories.
