Instagram Rolls Out Post Reordering Feature for Profile Grids

Instagram users can now reorder their posts on their profile grid, fulfilling a long-standing request. Here's how it works.

Instagram Introduces Post Reordering Feature

In a significant update that Instagram users have been eagerly awaiting, the platform has introduced a feature that allows users to reorder their posts on their profile grid. This functionality was announced nearly a year ago by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, and it is finally available globally to users.

How the Reordering Works

To utilize this feature, users simply need to long press on any post on their profile. A menu will appear, offering options such as "Pin to main grid," "Archive," and now, crucially, "Reorder grid." By selecting this new option, users can drag and drop their posts into the desired order, rearranging their profiles to match their preferred aesthetic.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, recognized the demand for this feature, acknowledging it as overdue. A statement from the company indicated that they prioritized getting the functionality right before its release.

A Long-Awaited Addition

The ability to reorder posts has long been one of the most requested features on Instagram. Users sought more flexibility in presenting their content, allowing for a curated look that aligns better with their branding and personal touch. Reports suggest that Meta had been working on this feature well before Mosseri's announcement in 2022. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi noted an "edit grid" option within the app as far back as that year, indicating plans were in the pipeline for quite some time.

Enhancing the Instagram Experience

With the addition of the reordering feature, users can now enjoy greater creative freedom with their profiles, moving away from the rigid chronological layout of posts. It's particularly beneficial for users looking to highlight specific images or themes in their grid.

Notably, posts that users choose to pin will remain fixed at the top of their profile and will appear grayed out when accessing the reorder feature, allowing for a clear differentiation between pinned and rearrangeable posts as users curate their grids.

The rollout of this feature underscores Instagram's commitment to improving user experience and responding to community feedback, demonstrating that they are listening to their users while facilitating a more engaging social media environment.
