Investigation Launched Against LSU DE Damien Shanklin Following Rape Allegations

LSU football player Damien Shanklin faces investigation for rape allegations made by a female student via TikTok, prompting legal scrutiny.

LSU Football Player Under Investigation

Louisiana State University (LSU) defensive end Damien Shanklin is facing a serious investigation for rape, following allegations made by a female student in a recent TikTok video. This case now involves both the East Baton Rouge District Attorney's Office and campus police, diving deeper into the troubling accusations against the athlete.

Allegations Emerge on Social Media

The allegations were made public when the student shared her account through a TikTok video posted on September 14. In her video, she indicated she is pursuing a criminal case against Shanklin, whose initial suspension for "forcible rape" was recently lifted in a Title IX decision. The original police report regarding Shanklin was filed back in October 2022.

The East Baton Rouge District Attorney's Office has confirmed an investigation is underway, although details remain limited due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Title IX and University Findings

Documents reviewed by ESPN reveal that the LSU Office of Civil Rights and Title IX previously found Shanklin responsible for "forcible rape" in July, issuing a one-year suspension. However, Shanklin appealed the decision, resulting in a reduction of his punishment to probation.

Shanklin's attorneys, Grant L. Willis and Morgan H. Johnson from the Taylor Porter Law firm, released a statement emphasizing their client's innocence and cooperation in the ongoing investigation. "What has been portrayed on social media and in the news thus far is not a full account of all of the facts and circumstances surrounding this situation," they explained, imploring the public to withhold judgment until the facts are fully known.

Victim's Defense and University Response

The accuser alleges that Shanklin offered her $1,000 to not press charges after an encounter at his residence. In her TikTok statement, she expressed feelings of anxiety and frustration regarding her ongoing struggles and the perceived lack of support for victims. She emphasized her intent to raise awareness about the situation, stating, "I really just wanted to bring awareness upon this situation because I'm just dealing with a lot right now, and I think that this story needs to be heard."

LSU has asserted that it strictly adhered to Title IX policies throughout the investigation, ensuring that safety remains a paramount priority. LSU President Wade Rousse stated, "LSU and its current administration take very seriously any allegations of misconduct involving students on our campuses. Our role is to continue cooperating with our law enforcement partners as they work through their investigatory process."

Impact on Shanklin’s Athletic Career

The investigation follows a turbulent period for Shanklin, who has not participated in team practices since these allegations gained public attention. Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed during the second week of fall camp that Shanklin was absent from training. During his freshman season with the Tigers, he appeared in five games but has not seen the field since the escalation of these legal issues.
