Iowa High School Track And Field Coach Charged With Sexual Exploitation

Lucas Tanney, a principal and coach at Valley Lutheran, charged with sexual exploitation of a student. Administrative leave in effect.

Coach Arrested for Sexual Exploitation

Lucas Tanney, a 40-year-old track and field coach at Valley Lutheran School in Iowa, has been charged with sexual exploitation following serious allegations regarding an inappropriate relationship with a female student. The accusations surfaced, prompting local authorities to conduct an investigation that led to his arrest.

Details of the Allegations

According to a report by KCRG, the alleged misconduct occurred at Tanney's residence. Police were notified about the inappropriate relationship involving a juvenile female student who was part of the school's track and field team. After confirming the unlawful activities, authorities arrested Tanney on Friday, and he was subsequently held at the Black Hawk County Jail.

Tanney faces a Class D felony charge, which, if proven in court, could result in a five-year prison sentence. Valley Lutheran School has since placed him on administrative leave while the situation is under review.

School's Response to the Incident

In light of the allegations, Valley Lutheran School officials have expressed their concern and commitment to handling the matter carefully. Rev. Henry G. Pahlkotter II, a representative of the school, stated, "Valley Lutheran School administration and Board of Directors are aware of the situation involving Mr. Tanney and are monitoring the matter closely. At this time, the employee has been placed on administrative leave while awaiting further information. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved and everyone affected by this situation."

Background of Valley Lutheran School

Established in Cedar Falls, Valley Lutheran High School opened its doors in 2004 and has since served students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Tanney has been a significant part of the school's athletic program, acting as the head coach for both boys’ and girls’ track and field teams. Despite Tanney's leadership role, the school did not qualify for this year’s state track and field championships.

Valley Lutheran, known for its strong athletic programs including basketball and volleyball, maintains a cooperative agreement with Cedar Falls High School for sports that they do not offer, such as football and swimming. The school's administration is working to ensure the situation is handled with diligence and integrity as they navigate the ongoing investigation.
